Shirebrook residents 1914 - 18.

Hi ,
can anyone tell me if electoral rolls were taken between 1914 and 1918?

If as I suspect, none were, how can I find out who was living on Cavendish Street at Shirebrook?
I am looking for the ever elusive George Bennett b. 1868 Tipton Staffs.

Electoral registers have been compiled for every year since 1832 except 1916-17 and 1940-44. However, I believe they were not compiled for everywhere in 1915.

However, bear in mind that it was not until 1918 that the franchise for men was extended to all those aged 21. Women did not obtain the vote in national elections until 1918 when it was limited to those over 30 who were householders or the wives of householders. As a result electoral registers may not provide the required information.

Trade directories (eg Kelly's) listing local inhabitants may provide an alternative source of information.
