I've had two people die in mental hospitals, although I did know which one. As the first one died in 1902, so I was able to get his complete records (not much as he was only an inpatient for a few months). However, the second ancestor, although admitted in 1907 didn't die until 1964. Originally, the authorities wouldn't let me have any records, but in the end decided I could have his admission records and the history up to 1909. They use a spurious 100 year rule which means in many instances the authorities won't let you have paperwork on people until they've been dead for 100 years!
I know other Rootschatters have been more lucky, in that the authorities they have dealt with have let them have the paperwork of ancestors who are deceased.
Your first bet is to write to:
South West Yorkshire Mental Health NHS Trust Stanley Rd, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF1 3SP
to see if any records are still available (some hospitals have destroyed old records) and if so, whether they will let you have a copy.
Good Luck
Lizzie

There is usually a 100 year closure on medical records. Stan
