William CHILDS (straw hat manufacturer)
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 13:55 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I'm looking for any info on William Childs, as far as i know he came from Luton and his family were in the hat industry, William himself was a Straw hat manufacturer and he also owned a lot of land and properties in the Bedfordshire area, his wifes name was Lucy Childs nee Radwell. I'm not sure of when William was born but he died on the 8th April 1894 at 73 Chase Street, Luton.

Hi Chinacharlie,

Is this the death registration?
William Childs age 53
Jun 1894 Luton 3b 226

There's a marriage in Dec 1889 for Lucy Radwell to possibly William Childs , Luton 3b 910

1891 census
RG12/1273 12 17
Luton, Bedfordshire
28 Bailey St
3 rooms occupied

William Child, head, 44, Retired Hat Merchant, b. St Albans Herts
Lucy, wife, 28, b. Upper Winchenden Herts
Ruth, dau, 4, b. Wings Bucks*
William, son, 1, b. Luton Beds

His age is a bit out - maybe because his wife was much younger?

*10 years later, this girl seems to be called Sarah Radwell (unless they are 2 different girls)

Was William Childs married before? This looks like him in 1881, married to a Ruth:

Earlier censuses seem to show him from a family of wheelwrights, if this is the same man (his marriage cert would confirm his father's name):

1861
RG9/829 18 29
St Alban St Peter, Hertfordshire
St Peters St

Jesse Childs, head, 51, Wheelwright, b. Herts Elstree
Elizabeth, wife, 50, b. Mddx London
Mary, mother, 80, b. Herts Sa*****ridge
David, son, wid, 22, Wheelwright, b. St Albans
William, son, unm, 20, Wheelwright, b. do.
Susan, dau, 18, Servant out of place, b. do.
Walter, son, 13, Errand Boy, b. do.
Emma, dau, 11, scholar, b. do.
Lucey, dau, 8, scholar, b. do.
Rosina, dau, 4, scholar, b. do.
Eliza, granddau, 3, scholar, b. do.

 Smiley

(Added: In 1871, married to Ruth, he is a wheelwright as well RG10/1573 39 17)

Hi
I would assume that it is the correct death registration but the only question would be why did it take so long to register his death? as he died on the 8th of April.
After Williams death Lucy married  Thomas Mead who's family came from Leighton  Buzzard and i think he died around 1914, and it is a mystery about Ruth Childs/Sarah Radwell as Ruth dissapeared and Sarah went on to marry Henry 'Harry' Janes so i believe Ruth & Sarah were the same person as they cannot be found on any census together.

Jun 1894 means the quarter ending in June = anything registered in April, May or June

Also, there doesn't seem to be a birth for Ruth in the right registration district. I too think she and Sarah are the same person.
