Lewis St, Stepney, SA
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 20:12 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have access to old Adelaide street info.?
My gggrandfather's death cert. lists his address as Lewis St, Young Ward, Stepney. (SA)
Nothing matches on today's street directories, however there is a Lewis Rd Payneham/Glynde. Both of which are close to Stepney, only 1 -2 suburbs away, but not sure if I can take this for granted.
Also trying to track the address of the Stepney Hotel in 1860 (can't find a current listing for it-may have changed names/use). My ggrandfather was granted the Publican's license for it in 1860 and would like to try & find some more info on it.
Cheers
Annie

Hi Annie,

I have 2 thoughts on Lewis Street. I do not feel Lewis Road is the answer.

1. Perhaps it was renamed - it happened quite a bit. When did your GGGrandfather die. I find Lewis Street mentioned in service records WW1 so name appears to have existed then.

2. There is a Louis Street - perhaps it is a spelling mistake.  Undecided This street has been around since our early days and still exists.

Need to check old street directories I feel too clarify this.

Stepney Hotel - Mention in this add which appeared 3 times in 1860

Thanks Kris.....as usual you think outside of the square Grin
I didn't even think to look for a variant spelling!
There's a hotel on the corner of Nelson St & Magill Rd (which for the life of me I can't remember the name) and this may have been the Stepney Hotel in days gone by...it's just one street away from Louis St, so it's a promising lead.
I'll need to find out its name and see if I can track its history.
Thanks also for the newspaper articles.......can't figure out the landmarks mentioned yet but will try googling them to see if anything comes up.
As always, thanks for your input.
