Did they makea stop over?
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 21:26 UTC (UK) »

I found the entry for two of my relatives who immigrated to America on the Ellis Island website.   They traveled from Southampton on the SS Philadelphia.  I then found a "duplicate" entry for them having sailed from Cherbourg aboard the Saint Louis a month later.  Re-reading the manifest for the voyage on the Philadelphia I realised it had been "crossed through" as though with a highlighter.  Would this indicate that they originally booked to go from Southampton to New York but decided to make a stopover in France?

There is some information here about people being crossed off of manifests:  http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/Manifests/left/

I don't know how the costs would generally compare, but maybe that particular ship from France was a cheaper option?

Thanks Shellyesq
Funnily enough the Ellis Island researchers pointed me to this site yesterday as they had a broken link for one of the manifests I was looking for.  I had bookmarked it for future reference but have not had time to explore it yet.  I can see that it is likely to be a useful site.
