Ferguson in Denny - a wife from Cabrach
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 11:02 UTC (UK) »

I study the people of Cabrach parish (split between Aberdeenshire and Banffshire) and came across a family at the High St, Denny in the 1851 census on Freecen:
John Ferguson age 34, master blacksmith b. Denny
Jane Ferguson wife age 40 b. "Calrach" , Banffshire
Children Ann 12, John 7, William 5, James 22m all b. Denny

John the blacksmith died in June 1857, "married", and was buried in Denny kirkyard. He was the son of Charles Ferguson & Charlotte Johnston.

Does anyone know who his wife Jane was?

Hi Stuart,

I can't help you with who Jane might have been, but I think you might have John's parents wrong.

There is a stone in Broompark Churchyard in Denny bearing the following MI.

"Sacred to the memory of CHARLOTTE JOHNSTON who died 7th December 1826 aged 31 years
Erected by her spouse John Ferguson for her and three children."

(This is a different Churchyard to Denny Old Parish which is only a couple of hundred yards away)

The only Fergusons listed in the Mitchell's pre-1855 MI Book are  John Ferguson, died 19.09.1821, widow Janet Campbell & three children. No dates of death for Janet or the children but this family are obviously not the ones your looking for anyway as this John was dead long before the 1851 Census.

Sorry not to have been more help.

Quite right Anne - i don't know where I got Charles from. On the death cert he IS the son of John F. and Charlotte Johnston.

Furthermore, the burial place is "Burial Ground of the U.P. Church, Denny"

I've just had a look at Falkirk Archives 'Church Finding Aids' and it seems that Broompark was the U.P. Church.

"..... it was not until 1787 that this Church opened as as Associate Burgher congregation - referred to in the Session Book of 1793 as the 'Burgher Place of Worship at Denny [originating from the first Secession of 1733 and the Breach of 1747]. The Session minutes of 1844 refer to the United Associate Session [of the United Associate Synod of the Secession Church]. The Church was known as Denny United Presbyterian Church from 1847 until 1900, as Broompark United Free Church from November 1900 until November 1929, and asBroompark Church of Scotland from december 1929 until it's union with Denny West Church in October 1963 to form Denny Westpark Church"

So, there we have it - John was buried (maybe beside his parents) in what's known now as Broompark Churchyard. (Long way for a short cut!)  Grin

As far as I'm aware, no Burial Records exist.

The building is now used as a Community Centre and all the stones were cleared at some point and all legible ones placed against one of the perimeter walls.
