Sarah Ann Cooke 1859, Castleacre
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 11:05 UTC (UK) »

I've hit a brick wall/conundrum. Can you help?

1861 - Sarah Ann (3) living with her parents Edward and Mary Ann in Southacre.
1871 - Sarah Ann (13) still in Southacre with her parents.
1881 - Sarah Ann (24) working as a domestic nurse/servant for the Burra family at Frogmore House, St Albans, Herts.

Now here's where things start to go askew.

1891 - I found a Sarah Ann Cooke (32, b. Castleacre) Living at Castleacre st., Castleacre. She gives her name as Sarah A Cooke, although she is now married to a Frederick W Eagle. We know this, as one of the house occupants is father-in-law, Richard Eagle.

If this is the correct Sarah Ann Cooke, why would she go by her maiden name? Maybe I overlooked it, but I can find no record of the marriage. What's going on?

Ignore this. I didn't fully read your post and missed the bit where you named her husband as Frederick! Blame the changing clock, sorry. Roll Eyes

I suspect it could be that they were not yet maried, though living as man and wife.

here is a possible marriage:
Sep 1891 Swaffam 4b/633
John Eagle
Sarah Ann Cook

The head of the family is Frederick W. Cooke (butcher) in the 1891 Census entry to which you refer.

Frederick William Cooke married Sarah Ann Eagle (GRO: 4b 646 Swaffham Sep 1884).

Richard Eagle is, therefore, Sarah Ann's father (ie father-in-law to Frederick).

I have just looked at the original image. Cooke is this Sarah's married name. She is married to Frederick W Cooke... Richard Eagle is Frederick Cooke's father in law, implying that Sarah Ann's maiden name is Eagle.

This is their marriage:

Sep 1884 Swaffham 4b/646
Frederick William Cooke
Sarah Ann Eagle

I have assumed from your first post that your Sarah was born Cooke - am I reading it wrongly.

Sorry Nigel, just repeating what you are saying...it's the lack of red notices. But it does mean that my original marriage of John Eagle to Sarah Ann Cook, could be worth following up and not the mistake I thought it was.

Have you considered the Sarah A Cook, born Eccles, Norfolk, 1861, living with an older brother William and his family, in Handworth, Yorkshire.

RG12/3842/54/27

It would seem from the 18671 census that your Sarah did have a brother William and the age gap is about right.

Thanks for looking Jen, much appreciated, but it's not her. William lived in Derbyshire in 1881 and in 1891.
