Kilantringan or Kilsaintninian, Barrhill - a bit more
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 13:02 UTC (UK) »

I just did a google on Kilsaintninian and found a posting from someone on this site called Agnes14 in April 2005 replying to a query and mentioning a Peter Gibson, Gardener, at Kilsaintninian, Barrhill.  She mentions that she found it in her 1851 Trade Directory.  Can anyone tell me anything about this Directory as it might tell me about others who lived here.

Thanks,
Joan

Hello Joan,

If you go to freecen, you will find Peter Gibson, Gardener, living with his family at Kilsaintninian, its in Colmonell, Ayr.

The family are there 1841. and 1851. the same place, once you find them, just click on previous pages either way and you will find all people living at Kilsaintninian.

It does not state the place is a farm however.

Hope this is of some help.

Regards,
Jonn.

Thankyou so much for that, Jonn.  I've just been on the Freecen site and it's thrown up many more questions for me - listing Kilantringan Mains, which will be this farm, but also the Gibson and Dunn families, both listed at Kilsaintninian and the Douglas family at Kilsaintninian Heather House.  Where can all these houses have got to?  The Ordnance Survey map of 1850-1880 shows Kilantringan (site of) which is where I presume the big house was, and Kilantringan Farm, and nothing else.  I'd love to know why the big house (and the others) was pulled down.  Lots to keep me going for a long time - thanks again.

Hi Joan

I did a double take when I saw the name Kilantringan, as the only one I know of in Scotland is the Killantringan a few miles to the north of Portpatrick in the Mull of Galloway, a beautiful series of wee bays and the site of a lighthouse.

Things become clearer when it's realised that the name Killantringan starts with the anglicised version of the common Gaelic prefix cill, meaning 'church', in this case, of St Ringan, also known as Ninian.

In other words, Kilantringan and Kilsaintninian have exactly the same meaning  Grin

Thanks for that, Ibi.  We had a few deliveries sent to the wrong Kilantringan Farm till I learned to stress that we were at Barrhill.  I'm having a lot of problems trying to find anything much about this house and the main Kilantringan house (and the others that were obviously here in 1851).  It's much easier to search for names of families, and I'm interested to hear about the people who've lived here in the past, but I'm not getting very far looking for the history of the buildings.
