One of my biggest brickwalls has been my gg grandfather Edwin JOHNSON. The earliest census I have definitely found him in is the 1901 census, once my g grandmother had been born:
1901 census: 103 Victoria St No. 4, Deritend, Birmingham, Warwickshire (Ref: RG13/2863, Folio 162, Page 11) Edwin Johnson, Head, M, 26, Bricklayers Labourer, Worker, Warwick Solihull Ellen M. Johnson, Wife, M, 26, Warwick Halford Bridge Sydney Johnson, Son, S, 4, Birmingham Walter Johnson, Son, S, 2, Birmingham Doris A. Johnson, Daur, S, 3 Mo, Birmingham
On his marriage cert the name for his father is blank, indicating he was illegitimate. Checking the IGI there is an appropriate baptism on 19 Aug 1874 in Solihull, to Elizabeth Johnson his mother. However I have been able to trace neither before this.
I have found a 'possible' in the 1891 census where an Edwin Johnson (18) is at the Birmingham prison. However there were several Edwins born in Birmingham around this time. It does fit in line with what I know about his character though - "a nasty piece of work"!
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks, Alexander

Thanks, I hadn't seen the 1891 census you found - it is bound to be him (what a relief to find he wasn't in prison at age 18!)
I definitely hadn't ruled out the four year old in 1881 - I just couldn't find any evidence that it was the correct person, since I also couldn't find a daughter Elizabeth.
So the ages for Edwin in the censuses so far are 16 (1891), 26 (1901) and 36 (1911). He was consistent then, and Aug 1874 birth/baptism seems just right. Still not sure about 1881 though.
One other question - was Solihull in the Aston or Kings Norton registration districts? I can't figure out which is his birth on FreeBMD.
Thanks, Alexander

That's what I thought, so he can't have actually been born in Solihull - it must have been either Kings Norton or Aston districts.
