If any kind person is going to Dudley Archives I would be very grateful for a marriage detail check. I have the basic details from familysearch but I am not certain I have the correct marriage. The details are:
Thomas Butler to Ann Maria Smith 4 April 1881 at Sedgley
I was looking for a Thomas marrying an Emma Maria Smith but this is the nearest I have found. Thomas was a tailor - sometimes tailor manager or clothier/ shopkeeper.
hope someone can help
many thanks

There is a partial transcription on the Vital Records Index which shows additional info as follows:
Thomas was aged 20 and Ann Maria was 19
His father was Thomas Butler and hers was William Smith

Well, my Thomas was a son of Thomas and he was born c1858 so it is looking more likely. Really need the occupations to match. Thomas (father of Groom) was a policeman.
thanks for your help

Yes Jim, that's the man!
I have the birth certificate for the Thomas Butler age 12 in 1901 which gives his mother as Emma Maria Butler, late Aston formerly Smith.
Looking for the family in 1891, I have found Thomas the tailor as a widower boarding with his daughter Rose, so Emma Maria must have died - then he married another Emma.

If Thomas was born in 1889, have you found him in 1891.

I have found a Thomas Butler born 1889 but he is boarding with a family with a different surname. RG12/2431/83/30
age 2 seems very young to be lodging but if Thomas senior had lost his wife he would need someone to take care of such a small child. I have yet to discover any connection between the Martins and the Butlers
Thomas senior and Rose were actually visitors to a house on census night - not boarding as I said earlier. RG12/2431/11/15
Thanks for your interest Jim

Possible Thomas is with his Grandmother.
1891. 36, Icknield St, Ladywood, Birmingham.
Mary Butler 59. John Butler 32. Jane Butler 36. Josiah Butler 6. Presilla Butler 3. Thomas Butler 1. Grandson. James Williams 19. Charles Williams 17.
Looks like Thomas senior with mother.
1881. 31 Market Place. Willenhall. Mary Butler 50. Thomas Butler 22. Clothiers Shop Manager (Tailor).

Hi Jim
the grandson entry - I had seen that but thought perhaps he belonged to the John & Jane in that household. The canal occupation doesn't seem right somehow but I will look into that family to see if I can get more evidence.
The family in Willenhall - I am fairly certain they are my Butlers - it is this family that in earlier census the father is a police inspector. I am hoping the marriage at Sedgley will help prove I am looking at the right Butlers!

Mary married to the Police Inspector is age 53 in 1871, that would make about 73 in 1891.
