Question about baptisms
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 21:11 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I've recently looked at some parish records and I'm trying to match up the birth records with the baptisms. I've got the first child born in 1880, baptised in January 1881 and a death registered January-March 1881. Then there's another child born in 1885, baptised in June 1886 and a death registered April-June 1886. There are also four children born from 1881-1889 and baptised together in 1889.

I'm guessing the first two children were baptised just before they died, but would it be likely that the child born in 1885 would be baptised second even though there were older children who weren't baptised until they were over 5 yrs old? I would have thought when they were having the second baptism the older children would have been baptised as well. Is it more likely I'm looking at the wrong birth and death?

Maybe the child born in 1885 was always a bit delicate, and could have been baptised in a hurry during an illness? I know even in my lifetime, when one of my babies had to go into intensive care when a few weeks old I was asked whether I wanted him baptised if his condition worsened. The other four children may have been sturdier, so were done as a job lot when the parents got round to it.

Why not send for the death certificate of the second death - it might show a sickly child who hadn't been expected to live long?

Thanks for the reply. Looks like it is the right birth then, I just thought it was strange they didn't do all the children at the same time.
