Help identifying medal ribbon(s) please?
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 21:24 UTC (UK) »

Could anyone help me in identifying my GG-Grandfather's medal ribbon(s) from the photograph attached please?

I understand that his uniform denotes that he is a Captain, which means that the photograph was taken after his promotion in July 1917. He has a 'V' for volunteer (?) on his collar, and the cap badge of the General Service Corps (or at this time, the Royal Arms)?

do you have a name? I doubt as ID of the medals from that photograph would be very easy.

He is William Heath Brimicombe. I have searched the medal cards at Ancestry and have drawn a blank. He first served with the Coldstream Guards from 1880. Another member has suggested that this may have been for a period of 6 years before he was discharged to the reserves as he was a civvy in 1891. He was back in service attached to the 12th (Pioneer) Battalion Sherwood Foresters in July 1917, when there is a mention of him being promoted to Temp Captain in the London Gazette. The Sherwood Foresters say that they have no other record of them than at this time, so they believe he was only attached to them for a short time, but I do not know what regiment he was with before this point.

I can post a close up of just the ribbon at high resolution if that would make things easier.

Please do, it's worth a try.
But tracing his service may be the way to go. The medals could relate to his time years back with the Coldstreams for example

I see on your other thread about William that he was in the 1st Btn of the Coldstreams in the 1880s.

1st Coldstreams served in the Sudan campaign of 1885, so it's entirely possible the medal ribbons are those of the Queens Egypt Medal and Khedive's Star.

Here's the first of those two.

Thank-you Neil; that does indeed look like a potential candidate.

When I contacted the Coldstream Guards some years ago, the only paperwork they forwarded to us listed William's promotions to Cpl, and his attestation form. Do you know where I might find any record of where he served, or what medals he was awarded as I think the only medal records available on TNA website are from WW1?

Medal rolls do exist at TNA for the Egypt Medal and Khedive's Star, though not on the website.
So it's either a case of going there in person of hiring a researcher to check on your behalf.

Just possibly though a Coldstream Gds expert or a specialist on the Egypt/Sudan campaigns will have the rolls at their disposal without the need of a trip to Kew.
A question posed on the British Medal Forum may find such an expert.
