Directories or suggestions -re Brighton
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 21:28 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to find an ancestor's occupation  and an address for him (and family) in Brighton.

He married at St Nicholas, children all baptised at St Nic's and he was buried there but the time frame is only a few short years: 1797 - 1810

I haven't found any directories for that time and I can't think where else to look.

Any suggestions or ideas would be most welcome.

Thanks

Di

Edit: The surname I'm looking for is Vandergucht (or Vander Gucht or rarely seen as Gucht) just in case anyone sees the name on a record somewhere sometime.

Don't any of his children baptismal records
give his occupation at all? or is it too early, I cant remeber when Parish records started appearing on those nice forms rather than a muddly scribble!

Hi Di

If I get a chance I'll have a look in the directories either at the weekend or next week. I know the Brighton History Centre has a copy of a 1799 directory which may have something in, but if I remember correctly it only listed the cream of the crop (my lot never got a look-in!) of Brighton society by name.

I take it this is the "formerly known as Tattersall" lineage you are after. Glad to see you managed to eventually find him, just when you were about to give up.

Thanks for the suggestion lizb - Unfortunately the baptism records don't show any information except the basics - and yes! they are muddly scribble  Roll Eyes

Hi Glen,

Yes, this is my "formerly known as Tattersall" family - and a very frustrating guy he was too Roll Eyes
James Vandergucht is my Tattersall/VdG's grandfather. I don't know that he'd be classed in the cream of the crop but I'd certainly appreciate it if you could check the 1799 directory just in case.

Having just found the fantastic "James Gray Collection" with all the lovely pics of early Brighton I was hoping to see where the VdG family lived 'cept I don't have their address  Tongue.

Good luck and thanks for the offer  Kiss

Hi Di

I've just got back from the Brighton History Centre, and I can report that there is a listing in the Brighthelmston Directory of 1799 by Edward Cobby for a James Vandergutch (that's how it's listed. I checked twice! Another variation to add) listed under the section for Lodgings, which followed the Lodging-House section, so I would assume he rented out a part of his property rather than all of it.

It lists him in Cross Street, and states he had 1 parlour, 1 best bedroom, no drawing room and no servants bedrooms.

That's all that was listed. The identical listing appeared in the 1800 directory.

Hope this helps

Hi Glen,

That is just brilliant! Thanks so much for checking for me. It gives me an address and even a possible occupation.  Cool

I couldn't have asked for more. I've seen the name listed with that spelling once before but it doesn't seem to be the most popular variation - of which there are many!!

Now I'm off to find further details, and pics, of Cross Street.  Grin

Many thanks. I really appreciate your help  Kiss

You're a true gentleman
