Philip Matty 1811-1873
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 22:43 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I am trying to trace any siblings, the parents and grandparents (and further back if possible!) of my ggg grandfather, Philip Matty (sometimes misspelt Mattey). He was born in Tewkesbury according to the 1841 Census (on which he said he was 30) but I have hit a dead end trying to trace the Matty line back further. I have found records of Mattys scattered in and around Tewkesbury, but can't find a link between any of them and Philip (I presume there is one - seems too coincidental). He married to Esther Harris of Overbury, Worcestershire, in 1843 before dying in Tewkesbury in 1873.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks  Smiley

Hi JacobeaM

Welcome to Rootschat!  Smiley

Have you located a marriage reference for him and Esther?  You should get his father's name and occupation from the marriage certificate.

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi JacobeaM and welcome to rootschat.

What Arranroots advises is exactly the way to go.  If you have the father's name & occupation and his exact place of birth it narrows the field for you.

Do you know how to go about buying the marriage certificate?

This is confusing

1841
HO107 380 4   Tewkesbury
Philip Matty 30 stocking maker
Hester 25
Jane 5
Rose 3
Henry 4mths

Is this the same one that married (H)esther in 1843, implying they were not married at the time of this 1841 census, despite the 3 children?
BUT - this one is a stocking maker, and that one a postman?

lets see what 1951 brings...

Yes - 1851 confirms the change of occupation.

HO107 1974 347 11
High Street Tewkwsbury

Philip Mattey 42 Postman bn tewks.
Esther 36 bn Worcs Ovenbury
Rose 12 bn T
Henry 10 bn T
William 8 bn T
John 4 bn T

so we now know from the marriage that his dad was Henry, a stocking maker.

Yak3 - thank you  Grin I was just looking into ordering a certificate, but you've saved me the hassle with the post! I think I know which Henry Matty might be his father, as I found one (though married to Sarah) in the area in the 1790s/1810s, although nothing about a son called Philip. It gives me something to look for though. Thanks again  Smiley

lizdb - yes, having children before marriage was apparently common in the Matty side of my family, with at least two generations doing so. I thought it was odd, given the ol' Victorian morals, but apparently they were too poor to care! Esther/Hester are indeed the same woman (died 1896).

Thank you all  Grin Now to find Henry Matty.

There are references to Philip Matty in the Woodard Database of the Tewkesbury Historical Society www.ths.freeuk.com (database is not available on-line though)

Burial Register Of Tewkesbury Borough Council, Transcribed By Mike English In 2002-3
Philip MATTY
24 July 1873
62
1702
postman

There are some other references to the family, particularly from someone else tracing the line. If you let me have your email address I can give you her details.

Hi JacobeaM and Derek

My first post here. I had wondered if Phillip Matty (postman) was connected to the Matty family in Tewkesbury that interests me.

William Thomas MATTY (1824-1884) was a mail contractor - civil service in 1871. He is the only known child of James Matty, who must have died before 1830 as his wife Myra Thomas (1793-1869) remarried that year to John Rigby. Both of Myra's marriages (1824, 1830) took place in Tewkesbury.  I don't know more of James Matty - perhaps he could be Phillips brother?

Derek, you noted that you have some details of another person providing Matty family details in the Woodard Database. Can you give me her details at my email address as spelled out:  mike9863 at telus dot net

Many thanks,

Mike

Not sure this is relevant, but I happened to come across this in the Tewkesbury Register newspaper of 25 Feb 1928 "Philip Matty was fined 2/6d. in each of two cases for not sending his children regularly to school."

Glouc Man,

That Philip Matty is Philip Matty Snr's grandson (my great-grandfather's elder brother). Great to see he remained a troublemaker even after the Great War  Grin It would seem none of the family put a great emphasis on education.
