Have been searching for a very long time for this marriage. It was a second marriage for Rev James Nicholas Hammond to Annie Broughton, daughter of the late John Vickery Broughton. JNH was still a widower in 1871 but not by 81.
He was well known and a Prof of English Litt at Victoria College He and both wives are buried at St. Saviours. He died in 85. I understand he addressed different congregations on the island Jsy I have been told some parish records have been lost ?? But am not satisfied with that. I have searched and searched in Eng--no joy! Hope I can get some help diinsussex

Hi
I've searched the indexes twice from 1871 to 1881 (at least) and not been able to find a marriage for JNH. I've also looked through the B's for AB and not had any luck.
I've also looked at his will dated 28th Nov 1881 for any clues but apart from referring to his wife there is nothing.
Finally, 2 family trees have been lodged at the Societe Jersiaise and although they note AB as his wife there is no marriage date.
If you can give me the exact date of his death I'll have a look through the newspapers for an obituary.

Hi Di
I'm afraid I'm getting nowhere. Millbrook is in the Parish of St Lawrence so I checked again but there was no marriage.
How about this (if you haven't already done it). Victoria College still exists. I called in this morning and it appears they have a librarian who has an Archive section on the school. Why not give her a ring? The number is 01534 638200. They also have the Victoria College Foundation which has details in past pupils on 01534 730464 (only open in the afternoon). They may also be able to help.

Hi Stewart, Your very helpful. I will give this person a ring and see if they can look into the problem. I did visit Victoria college a number of years ago, when I was just starting out on my research. I think it was school holidays and I think it was a nice 'ol caretaker who showed us the Gt Hall and the prize award boards up on the wall--where I was able to see Alfred delisle Hammond--son of Rev JNH,written on several boards--bit of a clever chap! At the time I did not realize that finding this second marriage was going to present a problem. When I could not find it in CI-- I then searched in Eng. Then in Sydney and in New Zealand as Alfred eventually went to Australia in 1875.He left Cambridge early (the smell of gold in Aust)--He completed his degree at the relatively new Sydney Uni. My thought was that JNH would have remarried before Alfred left--but that's just a guess. Alfred went on to become head master of a school in NZ.and later returned to Australia. The ships lists are not very clear as to whether his father paid a visit--I need to look at those again. The other thought, which I must ask the Librarian--Was the 'TEMPLE' at Vict college used as a chapel and if so might it have been used for a marriage? It is a mystery. Do you know if there ARE parish registers that have been lost. Thanks again for all your help.I will let you know how I get on. Di in sussex

Hi
I'd already had a thought about whether he had married at Vic College and I asked the Registrar. She said no - she had never seen any marriages at that place.
As for missing registers, again I've asked several perople, including the Registrar, and they are not aware of any missing.
