I have been trying for years to find out where my ancestor, William Umpleby was born.
I know from the 1841 census and from his age at death that he was born in Yorkshire about 1798/9. He married in Ripon in 1821 and died in Ripon in 1843.
I was wondering whether anyone would be kind enough find me the 1851 census entries for any William Umpleby born in Yorkshire within about 3 years of 1799. I could then eliminate them from my searches.
The IGI shows a William Umpleby, son of William Umpleby (and probably Jane Abbott) baptised in Topcliffe near Thirsk in 1799 and I am very much hoping that he will turn out to be my William.

Dear Wendy
Many thanks, that's brilliant. It excludes just about all the possibilities apart from the Topcliffe one.
I now feel a little bit more optimistic that my William was the son of William Umpleby and Jane Abbott.
Mary

Hi,
I have just joined this forum and this is my first posting. The names you refer to are familiar. I am directly decended from William's sister Mary, therefore we have mutaul ancestry. I have other siblings related to Mary but was unaware of William.
Jane abbot was still alive in 1841 and living in Hutton Conyers Ripon.
William and Jane married 3 Sep 1792 Kippax, Yorkshire,
Sandra
