JONES, Philip Henry
« on: Monday 26 October 09 06:17 UTC (UK) »

Interested in 1851 and 1861 (and possibly 1871) census listings for Philip Henry Jones, born Newtown, Montgomery about 1841. Father is Henry Jones, grocer. Mother's name unknown. Philip Henry Jones became a hosier and draper and settled down in Oswestry, Shropshire to practice his profession. In 1871 he married Jessie Maria Halfyard in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire and the couple then lived in Oswestry for many years. All their children were born in Oswestry. My own attempts to search the above censuses have failed. Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers   Smiley

Hi Bryan,

There's a good match on the 1841 census but the adult living with him is called Philip

1841
HO107/1440/1 41 10
Newtown, Montgomeryshire

Lady Well Street
Philip Jones, 20, Shoe
Ann, 20, Bonnet Maker
Philip Henry, 9? mo
/
John Atkinson, 20, Shoe m Journeyman

(all born in county)

I can see only one matching birth registration
Phillip Henry Jones
Sep 1840 Newtown 27 122

so I'd definitely keep this boy in mind eventhough there's no Henry in the household (maybe Philip was in fact Henry Philip?)

1851: HO107/2497 292 2 Phillip a Master Shoemaker employing 4 men

1861: RG9/4250 34 16 Philip now a grocer

Too much of a coincidence if you ask me. I found the Philip/Ann marriage but he was plain Philip:
Philip Jones - Anne Powell (the 1851 census shows a mother in law named Powell)
Sep 1839 Newtown&c 27 139

I have in my own tree an occurrence where a father's name is wrong on a marriage cert.

Hi Tati,
Thanks once again for the info and your time, trouble and kindness in searching for it. Can you check the references for the 1841 and 1851 censuses as the reference searches I am doing in Findmypast.com result in a no-show. Where are you searching to find this info?

Cheers

Maybe because it's the Wales census?

Hi Tati,
No, I don't think so, as I have found other Welsh entries. I think it's more to do with the incompleteness of the information available through these sources. What source do you search for this info?

Cheers
