MI's for Blyth Links Cemetery
« on: Monday 26 October 09 10:19 UTC (UK) »

Some years ago I found my ancestors on a list of monumental inscriptions for Blyth Links Cemetery. The memorial had been erected probably a few years after their death. I have kept the details but would now like to have another look at the transcript I referred to. I just can't remember where I saw it. Also I have  never seen the actual memorial stone.

Can anyone tell me where I might access the transcript of inscriptions and also how I can locate the gravestone in the cemetery? is there a plan?

Upstairs in Blyth Library..... and in surname alpha order, x-reffed to grave site

But just burials, not MIs.  There is MI list for Horton Parish churchyard.

It's a long time since I looked at these but I think, Michael, that they have MIs as well - or at least within the document you mention.  I've just checked my notes on this infernal machine and those that I've transcribed for my family start with 'in loving memory' and similar.

There is a plan of the cemetery at the front of this file in the library.

Thank you, Michael and Christine, for your tips about MI's for Blyth cemetery. I will take a trip to Blyth Library shortly.

Another query......which schools would children living in Church St, Blyth in the period 1854 to 1875 be likely to have attended?

 Val,

Seems a nice straightforward throwaway question ? But it isn't !

Church Street was not built in 1854 ( according to 1860 Ordanace Map)

St Mary's Chapel/Church ( originally a chapel, satellite of St Mary The Virgin of Horton) started " business"  in mid 1860s.  By 1890s there is a school attached to it ( Church St, Bowes St, Wanley St.)

Also near gasworks there was a school attached to Methodist Chapel ( today would have been adjacent to Bus Station)

Further west, along Turner St ( Now Regent Street) there was a large school on junction with Wright Street.

In your era, there were all sorts of schools, some a one teacher business, some  connected to religion, and some fee-charging, some day-some boarding. etc.

Trade Directories of the day listed schools in the locality.

( I THINK that an entry of "scholar" on a census did not necessarily mean child actually attended a school)

Michael, you are a mine of information! I will investigate further re the schools you mention. However, Church St is listed as the address for my ancestors in 1841 and 1851 census so I can't understand why it is not shown on the OS map.

Many thanks!

 Val,

You can see my source of info - on line.

 communities.northumberland.gov.uk

 Enter " Blyth" community.
From left-hand menu enter " Printed Material" for trade directories
( unfortunately misses your desired era).
Other trade directories on line on Leicester Uni site.. www.historicaldirectories.org
"Plans" for map of Blyth centre)
"Ordnance Maps"  ... 25 " versions for streets of Blyth.

For 1841 1851, what was page reference for your folk in Church Street- or their names..... those bits of what is now " Blyth" , that I am mentioning, were not called Blyth in 1841.   Called Cowpen and Waterloo. Blyth was community then was only the south-east corner of modern-day Blyth.. including old police station, Ridley Park , road towards Seaton Sluice/Whitley Bay.

The ref for 1841 is HO107 820/13 Folio 37 and I see it is headed South Blyth on the original and Parish of Earsdon on the transcription. Your local knowledge is much appreciated! Thanks you, Michael.
