Angus place name help please.
« on: Monday 26 October 09 11:07 UTC (UK) »

I have Mary Sarah Jones born c 1855.
 I can`t find a Kirkmuir on a map.
1901 record This  has been changed from  the original entry which is Forfarshire to Angus, by the transcribers, and I think it is Kirkmuir.
The closest to Brechin  with anything remotlely  like it is a Kirkton of Brenmuir
Can anyone help me with these places, are they near enough to be the same.
Also, would the area have had a place for a groom to be working in
In 1841.  I found Mark as a servant in  racing stables, on an estate in North Wales owned by a very wealthy  family, so I think he may have stayed in the same line of work in Scotland. I can`t find them at all in 1851, perhaps they were still there.
Thank you.

I can't see Mary Sarah's birth which might have been just before the start of official registration in Scotland in 1855. Her sister, Alice, does show on IGI:

ALICE JONES  Birth: 15 FEB 1856 Brechin, Angus
Parents: MARK JONES and MARGARET ROBERTS

You could check Alice birth entry on Scotlands People to see what it shows for the address at the time of her birth. Both girls show as born in Brechin in that 1861 census entry you have. Maybe some clues from that 1856 birth image?

Thank you so much for this, as I live in Wales, I don`t know much about Scottish records,
I tried  Ancestry for 1851 with no luck.
Can you shed any light on the the Kirkmuir / Brechin issue, there are so many Mary Jones born Scotland living in Wales I think the entire Denbighshire county moved there at some time.
I really do think the 1901 Mary is mine thoug

Once again thanks. Smiley

Looking at the original 1901 entry that you have already, I would say the place name looks like KIRRIEMUIR, written as Kirremuir. Kirriemuir is the bordering parish to Brechin, see www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-angus.htm

Once again,I think you are right.
I looked at Scotlands people, found the entry, and am now debating whether to buy  it or not
This is the one and only connection I have with Scotland, so to be honest I think  I will end up with a lot of unused credits.
I checked for the family in 1851 in Scotland, but no luck.

Thanks once more.
