war records for w.w.2
« on: Monday 26 October 09 13:10 UTC (UK) »

I was wondering if any one can tell me about R.A.F war records, and if I can get hold of them.  My Dad served in the R.A.F. in Iceland as a batman to an officer. and I wanted to find out a bit more about it, thats if I can. I have his service number.  Also is there any where I can find out about being named in dispatches, My Uncle was and has the medal,. He served at R.A.F. Skellingthorpe during w.w.2.   Hope someone can help once again.

Hi,
I can only go by the record of my uncle who served in the RAAF, Form P/P,25,

DOB, Next of Kin, Previous Trade, Enlistments, Previous Military Service, Medals & Decorations,
Mustering, Postings, Promotions & Reductions, Attachments, Special Qualifications & Movements,
Character & Trade Proficiency, Pay & Allowances, Dependants, Courses, Casualties & Admisions/Discharge from Hospitals, Exams for Promotion, Crimes & Punishments,

A fellow RootsChater (Kyt) advises to ask for photo copies of the record or all you get is a summary,

Hope this helps

If you haven't already done so I would recommend you read Frank Muirs book, "A Kentish Lad". He served with the RAF and was stationed in Iceland for a couple of years and you may be able to paint a picture of what it was like at that time.

Ps, it is also a vey good read.

Personally l thought the £30 was well worth the resulting records l received.

I had only known the operational part of my Uncles service, so l wanted to know the story from when he joined up....and its all there in the service records.....took a little while to decypher some of the codes but no problem with all the knowledgeable folk on here.
They were copied onto A3 size card and full of info, something to really enhance a relatives story.

GO FOR IT!!

If your father is due any medals and you havent got them once you get his records you can apply to the medals office to receive them.   Smiley

thank you for that about his medals, but I think I have them all.  I have now posted off for his war record, not sure how long it will be before I receive it. Can't wait.

I used to live in Skellingthorpe, the centre of the main runway now lives under the local GP surgery. There are still some bits around, and the old base is (was !) well commemorated in the village

The ladies and gentlemen in 3rd party records are remarkably quick. My colleagues mother had her fathers records within 2 weeks.  If you put in Skellingthorpe on the net you will come up with information about it and maybe even pictures.... There are so many good books about now.  If you find out what sqn he was attached to (if any) then there are Assns you can join and meet both ground and aircrew from that era.  In the meantime try the following site http://actionstations.fotopic.net/c711515.html for some pictures....

By the way Skellingthorpe was part of Bomber Command 5 Group so there is also the Bomber Command Assn.....  There is not an assn listed for the Sqns based there but that doesnt mean you can join another one that is from 5 Group.  They will welcome you anyway.
