John Greenwood - Chester 1870

My gr. grandfather was born in Chester in 1870.  We thought his parents were John and Mary Greenwood, but his birth cert says his mother was Ann Greenwood and the father is unknown.  His middle name on his birth cert is Day. Can anyone throw any light on how I might find out more?  I'm presuming that the John Greenwood that brought him up may be an uncle??  Thanks in advance.

are you aware there are 2 John Greenwoods both born in 1870 area Sandbach & chester Castle.

I'm fairly certain it's the Chester Castle one. Unless the Sanbach one's parents are John and Mary and they ended up living in Chester. Thanks!
