Hi Mrs Griff
Almost impossible to date with any accuracy I'd guess at between about 1890 and 1910 but it would be just a guess, based on the furniture and general look of the pic.
I'm interested in the canvas you say this was printed onto, as I've never heard of any photograph being printed onto fabric (except for early and experimental stuff, like cyanotypes).

Hello Pru, I thought it was about 1878-1884 he ws born in 1849 , my aunt his grandaughter has the orginal it is definitely on some kind of material about the size of an A4 she had it rolled up ,
Story is he was killed in South Africa in a mining accident , so could it have been taken out there , I have not been able to find any record of his death ,but word was sent back to his wife and she remarried in 1889 but all the details have become sketchy over the years and it's my brick wall .
Thanks Mrs Griff

Hello Mrs Griff
I was only guessing at the date, and have no problem pushing the date back a little further...probably not into the 1870s though. More likely the mid-late 1880s. That would make him about 40 in the picture, which is feasible I think.
A4 size on cloth is a really unusual format, if you ever get the chance to photograph the whole thing I'd love to see what it looks like! I suspect it is a later enlargement of the original photo, but it still sounds very interesting. Could it be a painting, made from a photo, do you think?
