Army Discharge Code
« on: Monday 26 October 09 20:22 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know what 'para 370 (vi) (a) KR' stands for?

My uncle was discharged on medical grounds in 1933, and I wonder if the above code relates to any particular medical reason?

It means 'paragraph 370 (vi)(a) Kings Regulations'.

I only have KRs for 1912 and the equivalent then was Para 392 (iii) (cc) - "...men with between three and six months' service who in the opinion of the deputy director of medical services, an assistant director of medical services, or a medical inspector of recruits, are unlikely to become efficient soldiers may be discharged."

So it was something in the training after three months that he was unable to do efficiently. Or a condition that developed forcing his discharge. I know they published KRs in 1923 and 1940. So you will need to find out if 1923's applied in 1933. Probably not.

How long did the MOD take to supply his record?

Thanks for the reply Ken.

As the code seems to relate to a standard written regulation, does this mean I will be unable to find out what specific medical reason resulted in his discharge?

I received the records within one week of me sending the application form.

My uncle joined the army again in 1937, giving a different name spelling and date of birth. He went on to fight in France and was captured at St. Valery in 1940, where he then spent the rest of the war as a POW.

If you asked the MOD for photcocopies of the full record - which you should have - that is all that has been kept. They have had 70 years to cull the file to save space.

Thanks Ken.

It's a shame I won't be able to find out the medical reason, because it might help understand why he joined the army again with falsified information.
