Clynes/Clines
« on: Monday 26 October 09 21:16 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I wonder if any of you can help me please?
I hav been lucky to find quite a bit of information on various branches of my Tree but am stuck on the Irish side.

I have found a Betsy Clines born 1866 Tyldesley, Lancs who married Thomas Hook on 1.1.1886 in Atherton, Lancs.

I am looking for Betsy's family and have found:-
her mother Ann Clynes born 1841 Ireland - would like to know her maiden name
her father John Clynes born 1840 Ireland and I think they were married in 1865.

His father was also John Clynes born 1795 (I think in Mayo)
he married Bridget - don't know when
she was born 1799 in Mayo.

If you could help me I would be so grateful.    Many thanks.  Jackie

Most of the information you will be easily able to get will be in English records not Irish ones.
Birth certificate for Betsey Clines will list names of both parents which will include mother's maiden name.
Since Betsey was born in England you should check in all possible English census records for the family and might be able to get names and dates for other siblings.
If parents were married in England you will be able to get that also. If they married in Ireland availability of marriage certificate depends on the date and their religion- civil registration of catholic marriages started in 1864 but other marriages from 1845.
To start searching for any relatives in Ireland you'll need to know both the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just"Mayo").

Hi
Thanks for your reply
I have tried to check the census records and have not found anything yet, which is why I came on here.
But I will try again, maybe I am doing something wrong.
I thought I would post on here because they were both born in Ireland and I know Bridget was born in Mayo.
I did not realise I had to know which religion they were - I have no idea how I am going to find that one out.  One would assume Catholic, but the rest of our family are not!
I have no idea is they were married in a church or civilian, which is again why I posted on here for some help.
I am sorry if I have done the wrong thing and posted on the wrong area.
I will go away and re-think
Thanks for your input.

You haven't done anything wrong but in order to find Irish records you will need more details and checking through all possible English records might get you some of the information you need.
When you start searching Irish records you'll need to know the family's religion in order to check church records (if they exist). Civil registration coved all marriages from 1864 onwards no matter where the marriage took place (church or registry office) but if they were Catholic and married before then there'll only be church records (or if non-Catholic 1845).

I have seen some Gravestones with Clynes here in Mayo.

If you are trying a search, try Manulla or Castlebar area -some there.

I think it may have been either Turlough or Keelogues Cemeteries.  If you come up with anything I can go back and check for you.

Headstones can be a good source of information

Good luck with your research.

Unfortunately finding gravestones with the same surname (whatever variation of spelling) won't link the family that went to England with ones in Ireland.
Bestsey's English birth certificate will list parents' names and then their marriage certificate will provide more details (especially if the marriage took place in Ireland).
