George RUDDUCK / RUDDOCK
« on: Monday 26 October 09 22:31 UTC (UK) »

I would be very grateful to hear of any information regarding George Rudduck/Ruddock born about 1806 in Mells or Kilmersdon or Coleford.
Also of his father Thomas Rudduck/Ruddock.
Thanks.

Hello kevs005,

There is a baptism on Freereg for the following:

Leigh on Mendip, St Giles 31/05/1807, George RUDDUCK, son of Thomas and Fanny RUDDUCK.

Leigh on Mendip is about 2-3 miles from Coleford. A beautiful church and village.

Hello again,

Looking at Freereg again, I found a baptism of what appears to be  siblings of George.

Mells, St Andrew, 12/07/1809 Charles RODDICK, son of Thomas and Frances RODDICK.

16/06/1811 William Nicholas, son of Thomas and Frances RODDICK.

21/08/1814 Adam, son of Thomas and Fanny RUDDICK, abode: Mells, occupation: Carpenter.

There may be more, try http://www.freereg.org.uk

Also on Freereg, marriage in Kilmersdon as follows:

25/12/1804 Thomas RUDDUCK of this parish, bachelor, to Fanny MAGGS of this parish, single. By Banns, groom name RUDDOCK in the Banns.

Witnesses were: John PLUMMER and Thos DAVIS (?).

Baptism in Kilmersdon, 22/10/1786 Fanny MAGGS, daughter of Charles and Hanna MAGGS.

Some siblings for Fanny there:

20/07/1788 Elizabeth Carter, daughter of Charles and Hanna MAGGS.
07/03/1790 Ann, d/o Charles and Annah MAGGS.
17/07/1791 William, son of Charles and Hannah MAGGS.
12/12/1792 Martha, d/o Charles and Hannah MAGGS.
19/10/1794 William, s/o as above.
01/01/1797 Charles, s/o as above.

Hi Carole and Jo,

I have census information for George for 1851, 1861 and 1871 when he was living in Mells with his wife Hester.  Unfortunately the 1841 census for Mells is missing.  George died in 1873.  I have no reliable information for his father, Thomas, apart from a possible burial in Mells in 1849.

In 1851 George gives his birth place as Mells, in 1861 it is Kilmersdon and in 1871 it is Coleford.  Hence my problem!  I have searched the Mells parish records for his baptism but to no avail.

Jo - your information from Freereg looks promising.  I'll take a look   Smiley

Many thanks.

Jo,

Thank you very much for your help.

From the information on Freereg it looks as if George was the first of 10 children born to Thomas and Fanny (Frances) between 1807 and 1828!

It may also explain why George was rather confused about his birth place as although he was baptised and presumably born in Leigh on Mendip, all his other siblings were baptised in Mells (which is where they seem to have settled), with his parents marrying in Kilmersdon which is where his mother came from.

Just got to find out where his father, Thomas, came from now...

Kevin.
