Hi everyone..hoping someone can help me here with this family riddle.
My great-great uncle, John Gleeson and Johanna Cashin were married in 1898, and had Uncle Johnny in 1899. They then had a daughter Mary in August 1900. However, in the new year of 1901, John Gleeson had no work, and a young family, and he decided to go to Australia to seek work and a new life for his family. However they didn't have the money for the whole family to go, so he went on ahead of them in Jan 1901, with the intention of sending the money back for Johanna and the children to join him at a later date. However, just a couple of weeks after he left, 6 month old Mary died of Bronchitus. Then, every week, Johanna would go to the post office to see if there was a letter or some money from her husband, but every week there was nothing. Years and years passed and Johanna heard nothing. We know he went to Townsville in Australia (I have the record of his passage there in 1901 - attached) and that he was back in Ireland in the 1911 census, and then had 8 more children, but what happened inbetween, when he was in Australia, we have no idea. We don't know whether he went to meet someone, who was with out there, or when he came back.
What I want to know is are there any records of him in Australia, and coming back to Ireland on a ship listing before 1911. Any help would be appreciated
Annie

Hi Annie
Some initial thoughts on why he went to Townsville/Queensland...there was mining activity up in north Queensland - I know there were gold and tin mines which a lot of men worked in. There was also (and still is) sugar cane farming which employed many people.
I am happy to have a look around and see if I can see him in any records, might not be until I get home tonight though.
Cheers Prue

Hello there Annie, I had a look at the Qld indexs for immigration on line and noted that also on the Duke ofSutherland in 1901 there was a JAMES gleeson aged 24 on board, Could he have been relative?

Hello,
If you are sure he went to QLD then a search of Australian Electoral rolls held by Ancestry.com nay be the way to go if you are a paid subscriber.
A quick peek reevals several men in qld but without a papid sub I can't get the details for you.
regards
Robyn

The John Gleeson who married Lydia in 1902 is not 'our' man, I think. He may be the John Gleeson who is, with a Lidia Gleeson, living on a station near Cunnamulla the following year, and I think he's still in that area 10 years later

Hi Prue, Jamjar and Tropical..thank you all for your speedy reply to this. Prue, would be great if you could have a look around for me to see could you find him in any records. I have the ship listing of him going to Australia but I never knew that he came back to Ireland before 1911. Maybe he did marry out there and have kids. Its a bit of a family mystery though and one we would love to find out about.

It was only John that went out there on his own, I am afraid. We know he went out in 1901 and came back before the 1911 census was drawn up. I got the ship listing off an older cousin of mine a few months back but only found out last night that this was my great-great uncle. Would love to know what he got up to out there.

Hi Annie,
I had a look in the digitised newspapers that the National Library has online, but there was no mention of John Gleeson (then again, there are no papers available for north Qld so it's not surprising).
Unless he married, or got in trouble with the law, or did something else notable, it's likely that there won't be anything in the records to tell us what he did. He may have drifted/become a swagman/done shearing/jackarooing/mining/farming....you name it, many men did it.

In the 1911 census in Ireland, it says that he was a general labourer.
