John Scott McInnes
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 07:21 UTC (UK) »

Looking for anything on John Scott McInnes born we think 5.5.1898.
Parents we think were Archibald and Mary (Scott)
Think he had brother Archibald and two sisters Helen and Katherine
John ( also called Jock) emigrated to Australia sometime after serving in 1st war for Scotland and settled in Braybrook Victoria Australia
Told he grew up in Glasgow but have no records to support any of the above.
Have done many searches but never seem to get close
Cool Huh Grin

Hi and Welcome  Smiley

I can so far find no obvious birth record for John or a marriage for the parents that you name or a family that fits on the 1901 census. I'll do some more checks in case I've missed something.

Do you have his death record in Australia as this would give his parents names or a marrage, etc.

Also, have you got any information on his WW1 service record?

The only John McInnes that I can see leaving Britain for Australia after 1918 left in 1924 but he was from Lochs in the Isles of Lewis.

Have been back to my father and he tells me John came out to Aus sometime early 1930's and was in Sydney first before coming to Melbourne. Am hunting for the death certificate but no real details on the war record.  Was told he changed his age so he could enlist at the time.
Thanks for responding

Nothing coming up for him leaving UK in the 1930s onwards (with no age restriction)  - maybe he came via another country or under a different name?

My mind  was playing tricks  Roll Eyes

It was a John McInnes, next of kin Archie McLellan

43 Plantation Street, Glasgow

John was b. 10 June 1900  and served in the 53 YS BTn, Highland Light Infantry

the 1901 census for Greenock
John McInnes
he is with his Grandparents Solomon and Flora Given
the reason I thought he may be the same one is
John McInnes's father died between 1895 and 1898 and his mother (Agnes Given)
remarried a man called Archibald McDougall in 1898
this John emigrated to Australia after the first world war and was also named Jock
cammac your father may recognise some other names I could mention
but I dont think I should post them on here as there may be still living relatives
Gadget there is one John McDougall on family search pilot site resident in Sydney
but I'm not sure if it could be him

I've checked the passenger lists (1920 onwards), Elaine,  but can't find a suitable John McDougall either  Undecided

I'll try 1918 -1920

Hi Gadget and Elaine - thanks for your efforts - spoke with father again and still hasn't found the certificate - Grandad reportedly lost all records and war medals in a fire soon after coming to aus
Dad spoke of grandad always being cagey about where he had come from and have no factual knowledge of original birthplace or if name change happened.
There was some talk about his brother also coming to aus but we never heard from him.
Your posts are closest I have ever come so far.

I have sent cammac a pm
with some details to see if his dad recognises any of them
as it may just be coincidence we are looking for a John McInnes's around the same time
