I am trying to locate the burial place for Everina Beresford (age 28) , she died in Branksome, Poole in April 1904. Could some kind soul give me some advice how best to find her. I have gone the usual route via the council who would like to charge me a substantial amount to search, so before I part with me dosh, I was just wondering if there is an alternative. Thanks in advance - Lex

Hi,
Have you contacted the Dorset Family History Society? I know they are transcribing MIs in cemeteries/churchyards; details about their search service should be on their website:

Hi Nanny Jan
Yes, I have contacted them, bit of a watery response really - maybe the only option I have is to spend some time there myself, just such a long way to go.
Thanks for your advice. Lex

Hello lexthecat,
I live very near to Branksome and am willing to go and have a look. The trouble is I haven't lived here very long and have no idea where to start with this.
Do any other Rootschatters have an idea which cemetery she could be buried in?
There seems to be a noticeable absence of cemeteries and those I have seen, are very large.
Jo

Hi Jo
That's just the problem I would have, from the enquiries I have made so far she may have been buried in Branksome Park, or Lilliput cemetery. I don't want to put you to so much trouble as I have the feeling this might turn into quite a task. It would be quite helpful though if perhaps you see anyone working there and ask if they can remember seeing a grave for Everina, you never know, it's such an unusual name, it may trigger something. Thank you so much for your offer of help, likewise, if I can help you, please ask, I live in the N W Kent area. Lex

Hi Lex The information you have added now makes it more likely that she is buried in a churchyard rather than a civic cemetery. Parkstone cemetery could just about be classed as Lilliput, but as it is "Parkstone" Cemetery that is probably unlikely. Holy Angels, Lilliput is on a very small plot, and I don't recollect seeing any graves there, but All Saints, Branksome Park definitely has gravestones. If she lived in Branksome Park (which is very different from Branksome), then All Saints looks favourite and (due to size) is much easier to search. I tried googling "All Saints Branksome Park" and it found a website, but it wouldn't open (with some strange message about too many users), but there is a telephone number for the church office visible. I suggest you give that a try first and see if anyone there can help you - if not, post again and I'll try to find a few minutes to go and look.

Hi RRYFS and Jo
Great news! I have called All Saints this morning, they confirm that they have Everina buried in Plot A3 Section 114. I feel certain that there will be a memorial. Jo, does the offer still stands of taking a look if you are passing - maybe even stretching to a photo? One other thing, I got the surname wrong, it's Johnstone - sorry! I have so many names on the go at the moment... Thanks everyone for the help. All the best Lex

Hello Lex,
I have been to All Saints this afternoon. Found the church, and Plot A but couldn't see a grave for Everina.
Some of the graves have lost the original writing, it has worn off with time and weather. Others have still some writing but it is illegible.
I was a bit late and the light wasn't great. I will go again earlier in the day and search once more. Should RRYFS get that way, by all means have a look. Another pair of eyes might help.
Weather forecast dire for tomorrow, so will go when I can in the week,
Jo

Hi Lex
I finally managed to visit All Saints this morning, fortunately while the Parish Office was still open, and the lady you had spoken to showed me the location of the grave. I attach a photo of the grave (and will do a 2nd post with a different photo) which I hope will be OK. I had to reduce the files to get within the limit. If I had realised how well the inscription would come out when taken from an angle, I would have taken rather more pictures, to fit it all in. The inscription is quite difficult to read - it is not a helpful font, and the lower part is below grass level - but I think, from the notes I took and the 2nd photo, that it says: "In loving memory of Everina Mary Massy (?) the beloved wife of Major B A Johnstone died April 7th 1904 aged 28 (?) years." The lower part continues: "Also of Emily Kathleen 2nd daughter of the above born August 27th 1902 died Jan 21st 1904" If you ever visit, the grave is on the left hand side of the path, on the left side of the church as you look from the road, just before the door to the Parish Office, about 4 or 5 graves in from the path. It does not have a surround (unlike the one immediately behind it), and has a small cedar tree at the foot.
