If anyone has access to the 1916 census I'd be very grateful for a look up for Edwin Cooper age 34 in Brandon District, Manitoba. Any details would be great, particularly if his wife Flora was with him (she was there in 1911).
He joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in Nov 1916, and there is a family story that his wife wasn't there when he came back from the war. I wonder if she wasn't there when he left for the war.
Many thanks in advance
David

Thanks very much Liz and Lisa, it's what I suspected - that his wife had run off before he left for Europe. Interesting that he gave his immigration date as 1911 - in 1911 they gave it as 1910, which is possibly why I'm struggling to find him - Manoah Edwin Cooper - on a passenger list, although I've found Flora as Florence in 1910.
Thanks again
David

You can order his full military records through www.collectionscanada.gc.ca You may find the information you are seeking in his files as there is a lot of information in the files. It could even have information on his death. On his attestation papers he is listed as married but he has Charles Cooper as his next of kin.

Thanks Valerie, I'd found his Attestation papers, but hadn't read closely enough to realise I could order his entire military history. Might just have to place an order.
I'd noticed that despite being married, he'd named his father, my g grandfather, as next of kin, which made me wonder if there was something adrift with his marriage. The fact that his wife wasn't with him in the 1916 census tends to confirm my suspicions.
He's a bit of a dead end for me, as he didn't have any children, but I met him on his last trip back to England in 1952 (I was VERY young at the time!) and I'd like to find out a bit more about him. Must speak to his remaining nieces about him, before it's too late.
Thanks again
David

Thanks very much JJ - all of the death dates on online trees come directly or indirectly from me, and I got it from correspondence my late father received from the administrator of Edwin's estate, which is now in my possession. I don't know where he was buried, but assume it was in Margaret, Manitoba, where he died, and these burial records don't seem to have been put online.
I couldn't follow the reference to his wife on passenger lists, as I couldn't find it, but I assume it must have been referring to the 1911 census.
I'll be ordering his military records as suggested
Thanks again
David

Dates are: Manoah Edwin Cooper, arriving 31 July 1925 Quebec, Montrose, Canadian Pacific http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/index-e.html I don't think you can view the actual image.
M Edwin Cooper, 1921 dates for Melita, arriving Saint John, New Brunswick: 21 February 1921 21 March 1921 19 April 1921 Images can be viewed.

Hopefully, someone has access to the records, as there are a lot of images to go through!

Thanks Lisa. I'd viewed the 1921 image (21 March) , but as the images only go up to 1922 I can't view the 1925 passenger list.

Hello again, David.. I MAY be able to find an obit if I look into local papers for the area...but it will happen next time I am downtown...Not a frequent visit I am afraid, and only if you think you need to see it...If he had no family, it might just be a simple death notice...so let me know, and I'll list it as a future lookup....J.J.
Hmmm...Did anyone find Flora herself on the 1916?

Hello David,
I have not found your Edwin Cooper on the 1916 Census but I have made contact with a RM office in Manitoba and there is a article in a history book written about the Riverside area in regards to Edwin Cooper and they will do a look up in the Margaret Cemetery for Edwin's gravesite.
Please send me a PM with your e mail address so I can send all info to you when I receive it.
Regards from Canada
Lilybell
