Hi, This business was quite an important one in Nottingham, but I'm not sure if it's still there today. Hopefully someone who still lives in the area will tell you for sure. (If not try ringing the Business Library or Local Studies library in Nottingham). The local studies library will almost certainly have information on the business. Tel: 0115 915 2850 Apparently there are some records of the business in the Nottinghamshire Record Office - look on a2a. Also found that a book has been written, which may be in the local studies library: Simon May and Company, 1849 - 1949 I found this on the following site: www.thorotonsociety.org.uk I googled the business and two adresses came up with telephone numbers, you may be in luck and find you get an answer from the said company. Hope this helps. Good luck. Kind regards, Paulene

Hi,Although I didn't work for Simon May,my employer, A.C.Gill another lace firm, had dealings with Mays.In the last 15 yrs,due to redevelopment of the area they moved to Glaisdale Drive ,Nottm.I do believe they are now no longer trading.I have a copy of the Simon May book, mentioned previously. Recently I offered it to Brewhouse Yard Museum,in the grounds of Nottm. Castle, they haven't replied. Did you get a copy,I would be willing to let you have mine ,if it's of any interest to you. Regards.

Hi, In answer to your query about Simon Mayer in Buenos Aires,I don't believe there is a connection with Simon May of Nottingham. According to a book I have from 1849 to 1949 about the company, they had agents in Buenos Aires but no factory. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Hi I wonder does that book give you the name of the agent in Buenos Aires?
Hey! just Googled Simon May lace, and guess what?!I think they started life as a Hamburg Jewish company who started life as Simon, Meyer & Co! I don't know about copyright all I can say the book they quote from is Merchant Enterprise in Britain by Stanley Chapman. I think the comma is important ie the company was a Mr Simon , a Mr Meyer etc... so my family history which, on this subject has come down word of mouth, means my Great Aunt Marie didn't marry Simon Meyer, her husband must have gone there working for them as it seems that is where they exported to.
