ANSBORO Born Roscrea - Help Please
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 20:13 UTC (UK) »

I have my GGrandfather born in Roscrea c1850 - He was Augustine Ansboro, his father was Martin Ansboro...I dont seem to be able to find any other Ansboro's there around this time.
I have seen some Ansboro' in other parts of Ireland and, i have made contact with some of thier relations who have tree's but, my relations are not tying up with anyone else...
I was kindly given Augustine's army records, this was fantastic, the nearest i have come - these give me the info of his birth place.

Any help at all while he lived in Ireland would be great !!

PS. he served and stayed out in India from c 1875. I have b certs for all his children and some army stuff for some of the sons.

Thank you

Having had nothing better to do for 5 mins I have found you a

Michael Ansboro, born to Martin Ansboro in 1848 in Toomevara RC Parish

That parish is about 10 miles west of Roscrea. Their records have a gap from about 1856 to 1861

I would think that this is your family as they are rare in that part of the world - there are none list in Griffiths some 10 years earlier

The clergy were none to literate at that time, so do not put too much faith in the spelling.

The only Ansboro in the 1911 census are from Mayo (and that is true of Griffith) There are more Ansbro in 1911 census than Ansboro, but again none in Tipperary or Offaly

In other words do not assume that they must have come from Mayo. If you spend the 5€ on the IFHF site you will get the abstract of that birth, which may or may not give you the mother, and may or may not give you Martins job in live

My first thought was that he must have been a soldier, it is such a rare name for the area, but if that is them at Toomevara then that would be unlikely. My family lived about 6 mile away from there at that time, and I have never seen the name before!

The fiche for Toomevara  should be available at NLI if you live in Ireland, if not I think you can order it and view it for a fee at whatever Mormon centre is nearest you.

I am no fan of IFHF methods, charges or indexing methods, so I would not be sure that they have all the records, or transcribed them correctly - hence the need to read them yourself if possible.
