Hi I have been trying to track down my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother Jane Clarke Stephens (nee Brunton). She was b. in 1798 in Muirkirk, Ayr and married a schoolmaster John Stephens in 1820. They lived in Bo'ness until his death in 1844 & in the 1851 census she was living with a daughter in Prestonkirk working as a school teacher - after that I lose touch with her except for a letter sent from one of her sons to 32 Ann-Street Greenock (where he had previously lived as a school teacher) he was sending her a bank draft from Australia but this is undated according to the address it could be anywhere from 1866 to the mid 1870s. I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to try & find her in the 1871 census? Of course there were other children in various locations so she may have moved by this time & not be in Greenock at all but it would be good to eliminate this possibility. many thanks Liz

Hi Liz I dont have any credits at the moment to view the cert but there is one Jane Stephens age 72 in Greenock on the 1871 census it would cost you 1 credit to view the search and 5 credits to view the actual census there is only two in Greenock but the second one is not in the right age group Elaine
Many thanks Elaine. Success! Yes it was her with a grandson. I hadn't used Scotlands people before so it's a bit of a revelation. thank you again for your suggestion! Liz

Thank you both so much! The grandson she was with was Neil McNeil Stephens from Bo'ness. He was the son of her eldest son John & his wife Isabella. I hadn't been able to find him or his family in any census' so this is great.
I've looked for Jane's death on Scotlands people & in the IGIs but nothing in Scotland so far. I wonder if she went to live with her daughter? She did have a daughter Jane who married a Thomas Davies & they lived in Liverpool. Here they are in the 1851 census but nothing after that: 1851 Census England Lancashire Liverpool Mt Pleasant HO017/2182/388/42 11 Morpeth Street DAVIES Thomas Head Marr 26 Block and Mast Maker Liverpool Jane Wife Marr 25 Boness Linlithgowshire Scotland Marg ? Dau Unmarr 11mths Liverpool West Lancashire Jessie STEPHENS Sis in Law Unmarr 13 Scholar at Home Boness Linlithgowshire Scotland Jane Crone Serv Unmarr 16 House Servant Carlisle Cumberland
Thank you so much again
