Hi shan42
There are no actual Census returns kept in Australia, so you would have to try and find either a marriage or a death certificate for your man and hope that there is some accurate information regarding his parents on them. It was quite unusual for a convict to return to the UK, although there are some that did.
Good Luck

Hi there,
As an alternative to Census records, there are some General Musters records.
1841 General Muster shows your chap as assigned to a Mr G Stewart at North West Bay (Van Diemen's Land, ie Tasmania)...
Cheers JM

Bit More,
1846 General Muster for your chap supports your info, as it shows him as Frederick Solloway, Tried at Worcester, 1836, sentence 7 years transportation, arrived 1837 on Frances Charlotte, and having a "Free Certificate".
Cheers, JM

Bit More,
Just to add, re his trial, also tried with him was a 14 year old lad named Samuel Barratt, who Raylen has spotted as receiving his own Certificate of Freedom at same date as Frederick... They were both tried on 16 July 1836, for housebreaking.... the thought occurs to me that perhaps they were cousins.... perhaps some genie clues for Samuel may lead to Frederick's origins too.... Cheers, JM I have inserted Raylen's post and snipped it and highlighted Samuel Barratt

Hi there,
"Assigned to" .... as a convict ..... they were NOT usually locked up in a gaol but were instead "assigned to" various free settlers or in some instances to former convicts.... This meant that your Frederick was sent to Mr Stewart's and he worked for him and Mr Stewart was responsible for providing him food, clothing, lodging etc...
If you can get to the trial records, you will notice that Frederick Solloway and Samuel Barratt (sometimes spelt as Barrett) were both tried together on the same day for the same offence... They were transported on the same ship and were discharged together... obtaining their certificate of freedom on the same day as each other...
Cheers, and thanks for your thanks!
With such an unusal surname as SOLLOWAY, it occurs to me that perhaps it was sometimes written as Holloway.... (S and H being quite easy to alter !) JM
