Hook
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 23:27 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I wonder if you could help me please?

I have traced my family back to a marriage on 17th September 1793 between George Hook - batchelor and Mary King - widow.  I cannot find anything more.

Their son, Jacob; born 1797 amd married Elizabeth Williams on 19.8.1820 at Hundred of St Briavels.

So I am guessing they lived in St Briavels area.  I have looked and looked on the free sites but cannot find anything.

How do I go about finding Mary's maiden name?  I have looked for Mary King but there are a few and I'm getting confused!  I was on the forest-of-dean.net site all night last night and you get into overdrive I think!

If anyone can help find anything or point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Many thanks
Jackie

Jackie,

Pity you did not give where George married Mary - Lydney as I found via the IGI.

I suggest you contact the Forest of Dean site.  You'll find reference to it in the Resources Messages Index at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,369296.0.html

Regards

Jackie,

A rather tedious but simple search method might help.

Let's assume for starters, that George's bride, the widow Mary, was married the first time in Lydney.

Going to  http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true and entering the batch number M036171 (obtained from the Hugh Wallis site) in the appropriate box, Mary in the First Name box and completing the region/country info. then searching; you will be given the maiden names of 125 Marys married in Lydney as recorded in the batch.  Some dates can be eliminated to cut down the work.

You might be lucky in finding a Mary who married a King Cheesy  Ho-ho!

If unlucky, you must hope that an LDS member has not "used" the Mary in a submission for then it will have been deleted from the batch.

If you do not find your Mary in Lydney, the real tedium begins Cry

Regards

Chas

Hi Chas,

Thank you so much for your replies.

I am so sorry I did not put down where they married, I can't think why I didn't and apologise.

I have been out volunteering all day today so have not had the chance to get on here, once I've done sorting the kids out etc, I will digest your second post, get onto it and report back if I find anything.

Once again, thank you.

Hi Chas,

Have gone through the Family search site the way you explained with the batch number and no luck.

So I went and found the Hugh Wallis site and found 2 other batch numbers for marriages in Lydney but to no avail.  I have checked a few other parishes, but like you say, it's getting tedious now!

Don't know if I should carry on really, after all I have got back to 1793 on that side.  So will have a think and a search and see where that gets me.

Thanks for your help and advice so far though, it is very much appreciated.
