Lowick Belford area - Pearson
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 23:43 UTC (UK) »

hello  -  I am tracing my family history from australia.  My ancestors are from the Lowick, Belford area. We will coming to the UK in Aug 2010 and hopeing to stay for a week or so in Lowick.

Is anyone able to give me advice on where I can find information or suggestions of places to visit.

According to census my 3 x great grandparents Thomas Pearson and Jane Hogg were both born in Belford about 1816.  I dont have any information on their marriage however the 1841 census shows they were married and living in Lowick with their two children.  Where would I look to find their birth/mariage  records.

The couple lived in Lowick all their lives.  My 2 x great grandfather James Hogg Pearson - their third child was born in Lowick in 1843.

Thomas Pearson was a boot and shoe maker and it appears James was also.  I have been googling Lowick and am very excited to be visiting this village of my ancestors.

Any suggestions would be most welcome so we can do as much preparation for our trip as possible

Regards
Lynne

Hi Lynne

How exciting for you - I am sure you will have a wonderful time.

You may already know about these but I thought I would mention a couple of sites that can be very useful for research in this area:

There are some Bishop's Transcripts (BTs)  for some years (many gaps) available free on-line.  There are some for Lowick and Belford.  Bear in mind that quite a few families in the area will have been Presbyterians of some description and so may only appear in the burial registers for surrounding Church of England parishes.  The NBL County Council has the best selection of Presbyterian records available for purchase on fiche - it is a PDF so I don't know how to cut & paste the address but if you google for Northumberland County Council fiche sales that will get you to it.

For the Bishops Transcripts go to:  www.familysearch.org

Click on search records tab up top of page

Choose  record search pilot

Choose "Browse our record collection" which is in pale print in the middle of the page that comes up.  The Bishop's Transcripts (BTs) have not been indexed so the search function won't bring them up.

Click on Europe on the map that comes up

Find the BTs under England - you have to scroll down a bit

Choose Northumberland & then the parish you want.

For places to visit (e.g. the records centres at Berwick on Tweed and Woodhorn) and a good idea of the parishes around Lowick and Belford you could visit www.genuki.org and follow the links through to the Northumberland pages.

Just in case your google search has not brought this great site up - http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/

All the best for your visit and your research.

Hi Lynne

Forgot to say that for events after the start of civil registration in England & Wales in mid 1837 the best place to start is www.freebmd.org.uk

You can use the references on FreeBMD to order certificates from the General Register Office www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

It costs seven pounds including postage per certificate.  Now is a good time to buy because of the exchange rate as I am sure you have noticed while planning your trip!

Prior to civil registration you need to look at church records (whether parish records or non-conformist).  As well as the Bishop's Transcripts I mentioned, you can check the International Genealogical Index on www.familysearch.org (by no means complete).  You can  work your way through films of records for the area by ordering films through your local LDS family history centre - click on the library tab on www.familysearch.org and then the on-line film catalogue to see what is available for the areas you are interested in.

You can also buy some transcripts of some records from the NBL County Council as I mentioned earlier, as well as the Northumberland & Durham Family History Society www.ndfhs.org.uk and Northfiche www.jwillans.freeserve.co.uk

Many people in northern Northumberland prior to the 1850s walked into Scotland for an irregular or border marriage.  These were legally binding but unfortunately relatively few records survive Sad.

Hope this helps,

Matilda

Hi Lynne

Back again - you are a lot luckier than I have been and there is a record of the Border marriage for your couple  Grin.

From Vol 1 of Irregular Border Marriages, the Registers of Henry Collins published by the NDFHS in 1995:

no 354 Lamberton Toll 2 Dec 1837 Thos Person (sic) to Jane Hogg both of Lowick.  Wit. John White & Catrine Gutrie.

Lamberton Toll is just over the Border from Berwick on Tweed - you might like to visit there as well!

The following marriage may also be connected to your family:

no. 2343 Lamberton Toll 26 July 1848 Thomas Pearson of Bridge Mill to Margaret Hogg of Lowick. Wit Jon Pearson, Jas Dixon

Presbyterians were particularly likely to marry in Scotland but quite a few C of E people did also.  However you may well wish to look at the local Presbyterian congregations around Lowick and Belford for your families, as well as at parish records.

I don't know if you have already seen this website
http://www.geograph.org.uk/

but if you put in the search box NU0139 for Lowick and NU1033 for Belford, you will find photos in and around both these places that will give you some idea what they look like now.

And this one for old photos

Hi Matilda and Steve

Thankyou both very much for the information.  A lot of it I didnt know about.

Matilada, how did you get the irregular border marriages, is there a site you can go to?

Steve, the geograph website was great!  You wont believe one of the photos of Lowick is exactly the same photo as I have on a postcard dated 1906.

I am very fortunate to have a lot of postcards that were sent from Australia to my great grandparents in England before the emmigrated.   They must have been great hoarders as they brought all the cards with them when they came here in 1910.

The postmarks and most of the messages are easy to read so that is a great help.  We're really looking forward to coming to the UK next year and seeing the photos on geograph made us more excited than ever.

kind regards
Lynne

Hi Lynne

The Northumberland and Durham Family History Society has published two vols of Border Marriages - see earlier message for the address for their website & e-shop.  These are a tiny proportion of the marriages actually performed so you are very lucky indeed to have your couple's marriage recorded.
