Putting very hot steel tyres on large driving wheels of loco's would need several strikers to finish the job before the tyre contracted too much.

The steel tyres needed changing occasionally so there was plenty of work for the strikers - unless of course they worked for Swindon Town football team when they'd find life easy Cheesy

Regards

expansion and contraction mean that you should not have to hammer the tyres on. Football is not my sport, thank god. Grin

Right Youngtug, Tyres were heated and then applied to the wheel centre which was not, so as the tyre cooled it became securely fastened, shrunk into place. As  a further precaution it was then rivetted onto the wheel.

I would not have thought it advisable nor necessary to rivet them. Sadly my father is no longer alive to ask.

Tyres have been known to fly off the wheel centre, rivetting reduced, but did not eliminate the risk, they went from the rear of the wheel into but not through the tyre, had they gone through the ride would have been dangerously rough.

Usually wedge shaped though some roads used hexagonal. There are some pictures on the net, sorry don't know the address, of what happened to an engine (in the USA) when the tyre came off the wheel at speed. My late father, who was a driver on the Eastern Region working between Grimsby and Kings Cross once had a connecting rod drop off at speed. Luckily for him and his passengers he was able to stop the train before there were any obstructions like bridges in his path. Had he hit a bridge with a trailing rod it would have been a major accident. Cause faulty maintenance.
