Dumb questions for things I should know
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 03:34 UTC (UK) »

Beginners... Wow... that's so appropriate!
That's exactly what I have been wanting to do for so long.  I don't even know what my nationality is and haven't for some time.  I feel so ignorant for not being an ignorant person.  How do I even begin so I don't feel so dumb when this type of conversation comes up?

Well i suppose you start with your parents,  where they were born and work back from there,  is often not easy,  but a fascinating journey

Hi tbsg and welcome to rootschat Cheesy

As daizi says begin with what you know and work back from there.

Do you know where and when your parents were married? If so you could then set about getting theoir marriage certificate which should show their father's names and occupations- I should add a caveat that that is what you'd get on a British cert and maybe on other coutries also.

People on here are very willing to help so don't be afraid to ask qustions-we've all been beginners some time. Grin

Hello and Welcome from me too  Smiley

I don't even know what my nationality is and haven't for some time.
We all usually have to have an idea of that just for basic requirements, e.g filling in forms, applying for passports etc
Perhaps a dumb question or two from me  Wink do you have a copy of your own birth certificate ... place of birth, know at least one of your parents?
My first impression is that perhaps you don't know that, or have anybody to discuss that with  Undecided

You've made a start though, lets hope we see some progress...

There's no such thing as a dumb question!

Everyone has to start, and I've not been on this board for long, and wondered if it would help to give you an outline of how I did it?   I had a lot of family stories, but had no idea which were true and which weren't.

I started by looking at everything I did have that was confirmed - birth certificates, death certificates, wedding dates etc, and then used a family tree site to start building a tree on line- there are a lot them about and information on them on this site.  (go through the link Bob gave above)

Then once I started building the tree with what I knew, I could see where the gaps were.  I registered with a Search site (there are a lot, free BMD (birth, marriage, death) sites, and sites where you pay by search or for an annual subcription: Ancestry, FindmyPast, all sorts) and started looking for the answers to the gaps.

I then found this board - everyone here is helpful and you can ask for general guidance, or for help with finding missing links where you are stuck

It's a long slow slog but totally addictive.   If you just start with what you know, and build back from there you'll probably end up hooked on it - I have!

By all means post any questions here for us to help you with, but please be aware that due to identity fraud Rootschat does not allow names of living people to be posted.

So please be aware of that when asking for help. We are usually quite good about finding people farther back in time though  Grin

If you post here and a moderator thinks you'll get more replies under a different heading(maybe a certain county or country) then they will soon move your request to a better board for you.
