Higgins from Dungarvan
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 08:34 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to locate my great grandmothers family from Dungarvan. She was Catherine Higgins and may have been known as Katie born c.1868-1870. Her mother died when she was young and she was reared by her grandmother. Her father was called Michael Higgins and I know that she had one brother Patrick who went to Colorado, USA. Her brother may have married a Sweeney girl from Donegal. Catherine also went to Colorado but returned with her brother to Donegal at end of 1901/beg 1902 and married Charles Griffith in Donegal. He then returned to USA.

From the Waterford library death cert info I have pieced together a family that may be hers, it suggests two infants died in between Patrick's and Catherine's births. The only factual info I have  is her maiden name and  her fathers name. On her marriage cert it says her father, Michael  was a farmer and the info I read said they were shoemakers. Does Dungarvan parish have both town and country parts? Is it possible that he was a farmer having earlier been a shoemaker?

any assistance on this or pointers would be fantastic.

Thanks Ger  for your interest in this. I had pieced that info together from the waterford death register. Hanora who was born in 1869 died shortly after.  I already have the 1870 birth cert and also Patricks from 1865. All we knew was that she was from Dungarvan and had a brother called Patrick.
My other big concern was that in 1902 she listed her father as a farmer and not a shoemaker.
In 1911 census she said she was 43 (born 1868) and in 1935 when she died aged 66 (1869)

Do you think that i can conclude that this is my Catherine Higgins? If it is I have a whole other line of Dwyers that I can explore.

Where did you locate the birth records?

Hi,

Found the births on www.familysearch.org

Looks very likely that this is your family. Dont seem to be that many Higgins in Dungarvan.

Ages in Census are usually a few years off. Looks likely that Hanora Dwyer was the grandmother spoken about.

This could be Michael's mother

I hope it is them and I am not claiming someone elses family! That info suggests shoemaking as a family trade. If I can get over the hurdle of the change to farmer. I need to try and locate Michaels death details.
Thanks again.

Yes is better to have 100% proof before jumping to assumptions but looks likely to be correct family.

As they are Shoemakers they may have being listed in local trade directories.

Also usually US deaths have the parents names on them?

I have a line of my family who were grocers and also farmers.
