Obituary from Brighton 1953??
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 09:11 UTC (UK) »

Would anyone be able to look up an obituary for my great grandfather, William HAMILTON, who died 11 Aug 1953?

The place of death noted on his death certificate was:
Nursing Home. 216 Preston Road, North Lodge Highgate Green Forest Row's.
School Headmaster (Pensioned).

I've also run across his death location as Outer Brighton, Brighton, and Arundel. I must confess I am a little confused with locations in England... I believe he had lived with his daughter Mary's family, in Sussex, prior to entering the nursing home.

I welcome and appreciate any help or suggestions.

Hi J,
His death was registered in Brighton.  The following places are included in that reg. district;
Brighton Central; Brighton Genral Hospital; Brighton Outer; Brighton West; East Brighton; Kemptown; Palace; Pavilion; St. Peter; West Brighton
GRO volumes : VII (1837-51); 2b (1852-1946); 5H (1946-74).

If you Google 'Brighton newspapers' I'm sure you'll find one that was published during that time & maybe they would do a look-up for you,

Seems very odd that a death which occurred in Forest Row should be registered in Brighton.   They are miles apart.  Presumably the certificate say exactly which office registered it though.
Where was he a Headmaster?   The paper for the area of the school is most likely to carry a report.

Hi Andrea,
I checked the GRO index for the death for the RD as the address J gave seemed odd.  The registration for a death is normally done in the district that the death occured, in this case the nursing home at Highgate Green.  Perhaps J meant that he was a schoolmaster at Forest Row  Undecided

Just went back to the Death Certificate:

The Registration District on the Death Certificate was Brighton.
1953 Death in the Sub-District of Brighton Outer in the County Borough of Brighton.

Died: 11 Aug 1953, 216 Preston Road U.D.
Occupation:  of North Lodge Highgate Green Forest Row, a School Headmaster (Pensioned)
Informant (Daughter Mary's) Address:  same as above, North Lodge Highgate Green Forest Row.

I did do a Google Search and came across Forest Row School, Forest Row Village listed on 1891 Census.

From his grandson, I had understood that he lived with them and then in a "Retirement Hotel". So I may have inadvertently put the two together. Have also heard his death place as Arundel.

Still somewhat confused...

If he went to live with his daughter after he retired he could have been a Head at any school.  Not necessarily one local to Forest Row.  Where were his children born?

His children were all born in Penang, Straits Settlements, while he was schoolmaster at Penang Free School so, unfortunately, I don't think that will help much.
