Hello, and welcome to Rootschat.
I've used this board since this spring and there are so many people on here with a wealth of knowledge, willing to help beginners like us, that I'm sure you've come to the right place.
I've just searched on FamilySearch.org. which tends to be referred to as IGI - it's a free site so I think it's OK to mention the web address on the board? (some one will tell me if not)

There are 2 George Hams listed as born in Oxfordshire in 1770 -
1. George James Ham, born Oxford 1770.   That one is 'contributed' which means there are no records listed to confirm it, and you can't accept them at face value, you need further evidence.
2.  George Ham, christened 14 October 1770 in Goring, Oxford.  His parents are shown as Richard Ham and Hannah.

The trouble is that if Ham was an Oxfordshire name there could be several, this is the only one that is listed here, and that doesn't mean he is 'your' George Ham.   As you know he was transported for highway robbery you may have a lot of information already that is worth digging into further.  (at least your family tree won't be boring!)

Do you have any records like a death certificate from Australia?   I don't know how much information they give, but those on the Australian board will probably be able to give you a lot of advice.

Good luck,
Maggie 1895

Hi Newsearcher, welcome to RC.  Cheesy
Did you find his death on NSWBMD's? That should give you his parent's names.
Then the IGI entries should be easier to handle.
If you go to the Australian Board there are some web sites you could try.

Happy hunting,
Leonie.

Oxford County Records Office hold the Quarter Sessions for this period so his trial details may be listed there,I also understand IGI hold the microfiches for the same.
There should be a LDS(IGI) Family History Centre somewhere near you,you can order for a small fee what they have & view them there. In addition the Oxford CRO hold newspapers from 1800 but you will have to pay for a search if you can't get there yourself.
Unfortunatey most Parish records for this time don't have much additional info. other than father's name & often mother's name isn't listed so as Maggie says we have to rely on something else to identify who we have ie.favourite family names,in this case did he have children called Richard or Hannah, census records to identify other family members,in this case of no use because he was transported.I would follow up on his trial & reporting of it in the hope something may be thrown up.That's if Leonie's lead doesn't.

Hi,

I have found a report of his trial in a newspaper dated 10th January, 1799.    The crime was committed on a road near Ellingham.  If you don`t have the details send me a PM with your e-mail address.  Alternatively I can type it out.

Regards,
