COLES FAMILY emigrated to Australia in 1926
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 10:38 UTC (UK) »

Charles Coles 35, Lucy Ann Coles 35 (nee Blackmore), and children Roland Charles 10, Gordon Edward 6, and Thomas B 6 months a Bridgwater Somerset family emigrated to Australia - left London for Fremantle in Sept 1926.

From other rootschatters I gleaned that Lucy Ann and Thomas B travelled from Freemantle to Southampton in Sept 38. In May 46 Lucy Ann travelled back to Fremantle from Southampton.
In May 1953 she visited the UK alone returning to Fremantle in Dec 53. In Nov 1959 she travelled alone from Fremantle to Tilbury.
Can anyone confirm - did Lucy Ann spend WWII in England? Also, when and where did she die - England or Australia? I will be grateful for any help.

Hi Edwin

There is an entry for a Charles COLES in WW2 in Australia with a NoK Lucy CHARLES, however the DoB rules out the father of your family.  It could fit the son who you have listed as Roland Charles COLES, with the Nok being his mother. Perhaps he just used the forename Charles?

COLES CHARLES : Service Number - W93625 : Date of birth - 15 Jun 1915 : Place of birth - SOMERSET ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - WYALKATCHEM WA : Next of Kin - Lucy COLES

Unfortunately this record is not yet digitised but you can apply for this to be done (at a cost)

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx

Search by clicking on 'Namesearch' next to the man's photo at the bottom of the page, takes a while to load all the Collins and then you can refine by adding the forename.

DUH! I see this info was already put up by Raylen   Roll Eyes

From Electoral rolls I see
1931
Charles (labourer) and Lucy Ann (home duties) COLES at Ivanhoe St, Bassendean (District of Swan, sub-district of Guildford WA)
1949
Lucy Ann (hd) is with Thomas Blackmore COLES contractor at 37 Glyde St, Mossman.  Charles is not listed.

Can't see her in other years (my access is only to 1954).  Still doesn't help for finding her in the War years.

Bit More,

WW2 service records, as per index on http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/Search.asp

Show a Charles COLES, born Somerset England, enlisted at Wyalkatchem Western Australia, and his N o K is Lucy COLES.

His service number was W93625....  Australian Service Records are very detailed, often showing correspondence post WW2.... this chap's records have not been digitised, (it would cost around $16.50 for that)...

Cheers,  JM

ADDED Oh dear, I see I am repeating info that Judith has posted, sorry... I do miss those red alert warnings....  Sorry
