Adoptions in Edinburgh 1864 - 1888
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 11:03 UTC (UK) »

Hi All,

I'm afraid I have to be a little vague about names on this post as all the people concerned have died within the last 60 years or so, and I do not wish to upset any living relatives.

I have 3 G/Grand Aunts who I have been having trouble with, they were all born in Edinburgh (census reports).

The first born 1864 died 1914, I have been unable to find her birth cert on SP, but marriage and death cert's give her parents as the people she grew up with.

The second, born 1878, died 1851 again unable to find birth cert', though the names of the people she grew up with are named as parents on both marriage and death cert's.

The third, born 1888, no info after 1901 census. But I have her birth cert, she was born illegitimate to a young woman in Edinburgh who gives her occupation as a Milliner.

As far as I can tell the young woman was not a relative.

The Third daughter was given her birth name, and said to be a border on the 1891 census, but on the 1901 census she is using the family surname and said to be a daughter.

Clear as mud so far... Wink

Now I was wondering if daughters one and two were also adopted? or am I leaping to conclusions.
Is there any way that I could find out about adoption's or how they may have come about.

Any help would be most welcome.

Jane.
