Help a novice find a birth certificate??
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 11:56 UTC (UK) »

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong (most things to do with genealogy actually!) but I can't find a birth certificate for this man. He claims on the 1901 census to have been born in Gumpton, Norfolk but on the 1891 census, Leicestershire, this being the county were he died (see attched cert). Please help?

The image of certificate can be found at the following location;

Hi Waxwing,

Looking at the 1901 census image, I can't see a p in the place name at all - could it be Grimston?

I think I can see the boy in 1851, age 3 months - do you have access to the censuses?
Thomas Peper Mars(t)on, reference HO107/2091 372 5

(There's a marriage Richard Marston or Maston to possibly Mary Pepper, Jun 1845 Loughboro)

Do you have the details of his marriage?

There is a marriage for a Thomas Pepper registered in the March quarter 1879, Leicester, Vol 7a. page 259, and on the same page is an Alice Wilson.

If this is your Thomas, the marriage cert, or PR should give more details to help identify his birth.

Good hunting! Smiley

Site overload!!  Tongue Tongue

If young Thomas was 3 months old on 30th March then we'd expect a birth registration in the March quarter. I couldn't see him in March on the complete index. There's always the possibility that he wasn't registered at all  Undecided

there are reasons registration gets delayed.
ordering the cert i mentioned and making sure the mothers name is pepper would not cost anything if it was not the right one.

Agreed  Smiley

Just wary because the 1861 census shows a Thomas Marston age 9 born Dalby Parva (also Melton Mowbray district)

Do you know Alice's maiden name, Waxwing?

I was trying to find Thomas on the missing censuses and now have a theory that he was married to a Sarah Ann Kellam first (who still claims to be married in 1891, but her husband isn't at home.)

The nearest match I can find for Thomas in 1881 is this man:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&indiv=try&h=12418129
RG11/3176 105 17

The middle initital isn't very clear on the census page but interestingly, 10 years on, Sarah Ann has a son George Pepper Marston age 8.

The only Sarah Ann born at the right time in Queniborough seems to have been a Sarah Ann Kellam, and there's a marriage Thomas Barston - Sarah Ann Kellam in Dec 1871 Leicester.

So - maybe he deserted Sarah and reversed his name for anonymity's sake?
