John Butterworth Shopkeeper 1830ish Oldham

On the Parish Records for Baptisms our Great great Great grandad is down as being a shopkeeper and is shown as such on the 1841 census on 1851 census he is down as a gentleman (I am assuming this means he has retired?) Does anybody know how I can find out what type of shopkeeper  Huh

Directories would be the best - if there is one for wherever and whenever he was shopkeeping.

Pigots 1834 for Oldham (online at Ancestry)

seems to have two John Butterworths under the " Shopkeepers and dealers in groceries and sundries" heading
-

one Edge Lane and one Royton.
