William Jenkins an 1861 and 1871 Look Up please
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 15:09 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I am requesting an 1861 and an 1871 census look up for a William Jenkins of New Brunswick.

The 1851 census of Glenelg, Northumberland County has him as a William Jinkins, age 9, English, living in the household of Robert and Margaret Mays. He is listed as a servant. It is possible that in 1861 William was living in Ludlow, Northumberland County.

Thank You,

2 possibilities in the 1861 census
William Jenkins 21 b. 1840 NB, servant in the household of William McKay in Ludlow Northumberland
William Jenkins 21, b. 1840 NB, farm servant in the household of John Nunan in Chatham Northumberland, Church of Scotland

1871 in Springfield, Kings is William Jenkins (25) with parents Aaron(66) and Mary(64) and 4 toher siblings.

1871 in St Marys York is William Jenkins(26) carpenter b. NB, English heritage married to Sarah N. (29) and daughter Sarah E., one month old born in February.
This same family appears in the same location for the 1881 and 1891 census living with Nancy McBean(61) in 1881 and Sarah's name is shown as Christine.  In 1891 they are lodgers with Nancy's daughter Isabel McBean(43) and William is still a carpenter.
Children of this couple are Sarah Elisa b. 1871 (schoolteacher in 1891)
Angus b. 1878, Isabell b. 1881, George b. 1883.
In 1901 this William Jenkins with wife Sarah and children Isabell and George have relocated to Red Deer, Alberta.

Hi,

Thanks. Strange. I could find just one William Jenkins in  Glenelg, Northumberland in 1851. He is a William Jinkins, age 9, a servant, in the home of Robert Mays or Hays. Could the two in 1861 possibly be the same one? He could have changed residences during the period of the census.
The 1871 William you found is not the one I am looking for. My William's parents died before 1850. I found a William in Red Deer in 1891. He is listed as married but the cenus did not include his wife and children. He must have gone ahead to establish the home. The 1851 census of St. Mary's, York, has a Sarah H as the daughter of an Ann McBean. Isabell Mcbean of 1891 is sarah's sister.

Cheers,

I suppose the 2 Williams in 1861 could be the same.  The one in Ludlow is Presbyterian English descent and the one in Chatham is Church of Scotland but Irish descent.

I was unsure from your response whether the William who relocated to Alberta is of interest to you or not.  In 1911 he, Sarah and George P are farming in Red Deer and on the 1916 census George is shown as 73 year old Wm's 81 year old son.  I think they got his birth year mixed up with his age.  If this family is of interest you can find William's obituary in the Red Deer paper from this link.

Hi,

Yes I am interested in both Williams at this point.  They were born around the same time. I think one went to Alberta and the other to New York. I don't always trust the origin or the religion. They seem to change for some from census to census. I will try for the obituary of William of Alberta.

Much Appreciated
