George Joseph Blake, Limerick City
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 15:23 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to help a friend's husband whose father was George Joseph Blake born about 1896/7 in Limerick City.  My friend's husband was estranged from his father but is trying to trace something of his history.  I am hopeless at Irish history as I have not had any Irish relatives during 30 odd years of FH.
I think I have found his Dad in 1911 census as step son of John Rourke aged 14.  His Mum would then be Mary Ann (now Rourke). Living at 11 Lady Lane, Limerick.
He probably married Mary Bridget O'Dwyer about 1925-1927.
It is thought that he was in Royal Munster Fusiliers in WW1, although I cannot find him and that he was imprisoned after an uprising for a while.  He tried to rejoin the Ulster Rifles in WW2 but declared unfit for duty and transferred to Pioneer Corps. Possible discharge 1941. It is said that he won a George medal during WW1, but again I can only find one in the medal role No 6057 and he has the Victory and British medals.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for
1. marriage (both were Catholic)

2.Baptism of Children - in Limerick City probably.
3. possibility of his war record - not on Ancestry I have checked.

Very many thanks for reading this.
Yours hopefully!

Welcome to Irish research as it were. Just remember that we can't post recent details so won't be able to give any details on children (probably born late 1920s onwards).

However, index to Irish civil registration is online (free) and you can search there for more clues. For the marriage you'll need to search for bride and groom separately then cross-reference results for matching details (year/quarter, registration district, volume and page numbers) then you'll have details need to order the marriage certificate if you wish.

Recent baptisms will not be online and you'll probably have to check with the church for that information.
If you are searching for details of WWI record and it's not on Ancestry it's most like been destroyed (only about 1/3 of the records survived WWII bomb damage).

To order GRO certificates-

Would George Blake and his wife most likely have married in Limerick?
Did he spend the rest of his life in Ireland?

Hello Aghadowey and Ger
Many, many thanks for your helpful insights.  I have found the marriage of his widowed mother to his stepfather and info for his birth as well, so will be sending off for them.  Backwards from there - well, the possibilities are great.  I am seeing my friend and her husband tomorrow to show them the good news.
Once again very many thanks.
