SHOPLAND Family (Stawley)
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 15:25 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I'm trying to trace my family back and i seem to have come unstuck with William SHOPLAND marrying Elizabeth BAKER at Ashbrittle 30 Mar 1795. My problem is when and where was William born? Was it in Stawley? 1775??? and what about Elizabeth! when and where was she born?

Any help appreciated

Hello Jo,

Both Freereg and the IGI have a baptism at Ashbrittle 23/02/1766, for William SHOPLAND, son of Richard SHOPLAND.

He appears to have a sibling, Martha SHOPLAND, baptised at Ashbrittle in 07/04/1771, daughter of Richard SHOPLAND.

The marriage in 1795 could have been a second marriage but I wouldn't rule out it being his first, assuming it is the right person.

Hello Jo

Thank you so much for getting back to me with the information.

Yes it probably is the William I'm after. Certainly the date of 1766 seems to fit in with his getting married in 1795 (29 years of age? Like you pointed out it's a bit old to be getting married the first time! Did people marry late at that time?)

They didn't seem to have much imagination back then and seemed to name the children after parents etc! Don't know why I'm moaning. I was given the same name as my father!!!!

I visited the Taunton Somerset Archives last week and found out quite a lot of information (very hard to read and decipher the old records) part of which was that William had several children, one of whom was called Martha (named after Williams sister?). I will probably visit there again in a couple of months to have another search!

Thanks again. My quest continues
Regards

Jo
