Elizabeth Taylor/William Hopwood
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 16:08 UTC (UK) »

Hi I am trying to find information about Elizabeth Taylor (mother) and William Hopwood(father) of John Taylor. John Taylor was christened 04 March 1827 at Weston and Wixall under Redcastle. On his birth certificate it shows that he was illegitimate. There is a possability that she came from manchester and in later years Elizabeth Taylor married Samuel Morris.
Any information about William or Elizabeth  would be helpful.

Hi Patrish, thanks for your reply.
The definite information that I have is that John Taylor is the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Taylor and William Hopwood. born/christened 04 March 1827 at Weston and Wixall under Redcastle.
Looking at the 1871 census return that family name  has been transcribed in error as FAYLOR and shows John and the family now have Elizabeth Morris living with them and described as "mother".

I have been unable to confirm that this is Elizabeth Taylor and have reached a dead end tracing either William Hopwood or Elizabeth Taylor.
Any help or advice would be gratefully received

Thanks again for your assistance, here is the information that I have confirmed in chronological order:-

1. John Taylor Christened 04/03/1827 at Weston &Wixall under Redcastle.
Certificate shows father William Hopwood mother Elizabeth Taylor

2. Unable to locate John, Elizabeth or William in the 1841 census

3. 16th July 1849 Marriage of John Taylor and Emma Jones at Sutton Maddock.
John Taylor is shown as residing at Sutton.
Certificate shows fathers name as Elizabeth Taylor

4 1851 Census John Taylor and Emma living at Stockton with son Charles Taylor

5 1861 census John Taylor and Emma living at Broseley with Charles(10), William James(Cool, Mary Ann(6), Elizabeth(2) and John(4months)

6 1871 census john Taylor and Emma living at Madeley with Elizabeth(12), John(10), Samuel(7) Mathew(4) and Elizabeth Morris(76) ***Shown as Mother on census return***
NOTE Ancestry .co.uk have Taylor transcribed as FAYLOR

7      1881  census John Taylor and Emma living at Madeley with John (20), Samuel(18), Mathew(14), Mary Corbett(13) Servant, Thomas Morris(58) Lodger

7 1891  census John Taylor and Emma living at Madeley with Thomas Morris (71) lodger and Alice    Bullock(14) servant

8 1901  census John Taylor and Emma living at Madeley with Edith Louisa Elliot(15) servant.

9 3rd December 1906 Death certificate for John Taylor aged 79

Assuming that Elizabeth Taylor married Samuel Morris then I have located a marriage between Samuel Morris and Elizabeth Taylor at Hodnet on 22nd March 1836.

Is this of any use to you

Very best regards

Howard

I am not familiar with the Shropshire area, but looking on the map Weston under Redcastle is very close to Hodnet, so  it might be a fair assumption that the marriage to Samuel Morris could be correct.

I wonder if this is them in 1841 HO107/902/12/2/37/18   Undecided

Living High Street, Wem.

Samuel Morris 47 Ag Lab born in the county
Elizabeth       46                 "
Charles          1                  "

Elizabeth is down as 76 in 1871 making her born 1795 so the age in 1841 fits, also Wem is very close to Weston under Redcastle.

One step at a time  Wink

Marriage of John Taylor and Emma Jones

If we can find Emma Jones in a census or birth we can find out if her mother was an Elizabeth if not that would confirm that Elizabeth in 1871 is Johns mother.

Who did it give as her father and his occupation on the marriage certificate, also were either witnesses Jones's  Huh , that will help find the correct one.

This looks like Charles Moriss's birth Sept q. 1840 Wem  18 - 191 , I cannot see it on the IGI  to confirm parents though.  Sad

It may prove useful at a later stage to see what his mother's maiden name is.

There are at least 3 John Taylors the correct age in 1841 all given as male servants....... dont think we have much hope of finding the correct one, its such a common name.

Hi Patrish

I have a copy of John Taylor and Emma Jones wedding certificate.
It is dated 16th July 1849 and lists Emma as 19years old and a spinster living at White Cottage, Sutton Maddock, Shropshire. Her fathers name is James Jones, a labourer.
The two witnesses were Samuel Lees and Martha Moleneux.
Does this helo at all?

Best wishes

John Taylors father is listed as William Hopwood, not John Hopwood.
Hope that has not confused matters

Best wishes

In 1841 there is a Emma Jones aged 11 with a Charles Jones aged 3 but no parents they are living in the household of a Richard Headly 50 a Labourer and Jane aged 55 address White House, Sutton Maddock.

So that doesent  help us to find her mother, I will take a look on the IGI.
