Train Suicide Esher
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 16:09 UTC (UK) »

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help? My Grandfather committed suicide by jumping in front of a train Esher Station on 21 August 1949 - there was an inquest and I have the death certificate.  How would I find if there was any newspaper articles written about it? (My Mum was only 4 and has since passed away - there are no other family members to ask?) - Its not pleasant but would like to find the truth?
Sorry would help if I gave you his name William James Barnett.

You could try emailing Surrey History centre at Email: shs@surreycc.gov.uk

I found them very helpful when I had a query like yours - if they don't have the records themselves they will point you in the right direction. If they do have the records I'm sure someone locally will be glad to pick them up for you.

A horrible story, but like you I feel the tragedies are as much part of my family history as the successes.

Good luck

I had a suicide in my family tree, grandmother around 1900, extremely traumatic, and I only found out in 1997 though I had sensed something was wrong ever since I was a small boy in the 1940s.The inquest at that time was covered in very great detail in the local papers, in the early 1900s inquests for carried out just as quickly as possible, but with more modern mortuary facilities there could be a longer interval between the incident and the inquest. You know the death date, find newspapers circulating in the area at that time, start the next day and work forwards. Be prepared for some extremely graphic details. The coroner's papers may still exist, but are closed for 75 years after the incident. It may be worth enquiring, if they do exist you can view them later.

The large family, together with resultant financial pressures might well have been a major factor in the entire incident. Just take it as it comes and be prepared for almost anything.
