Taranaki death notices(completed with thanks)
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 20:55 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Can anybody advise me on the best way to get a death notice from a Taranaki newspaper? I am looking for Bridget Ford dod  6 September 1950 and Alfred Ford dod  23 August 1972.
I am guessing the paper would have been the Taranaki Herald, but have been unable to find anything on line, perhaps microfische only.

Regards
Leandra Smiley

Hi

There is a archive room attatched to the museum/library, which holds a lot of records, sorry cant tell you the dates off the top of my head.

Though I'm picking you dont live in New Plymouth  Smiley The council does offer a service for searching the Archives but I think its fairly dear (and if your loaded then that wont be a problem lol  Grin)

Also you could try the paper directly. Taranaki Daily News, I will PM the address and phone number.

If you have no joy, get back to me, we go through to New Plymouth fairly frequently and I could go have a look for you.

Cheers Gail.

Hi Leandra

Just noting from your other thread, that these FORDs were buried in Stratford ... therefore the NZSG branch at Stratford, may be able to assist you ?

Hi Leandra

Many thanks for your kind words.   Smiley

Just from previous experience, I'm not so sure that modern day newspapers are able to help with "historical" items (death notices etc.)  ... but of course, it's always worth a try.   Wink
(Microfilmed newspaper copy tends to be archived in places other than newspaper offices / or headquarters.)

Stratford NZSG somehow seemed the logical place to make an enquiry to ... especially if Bridget and Alfred had been long-term residents of the area ... and who knows  ... maybe the branch holds additional information for the FORD family ??

Hope you get lucky.   Smiley

Hi Leandra

If your FORDs are buried in Stratford, have you seen or is there a headstone?

Me and the hubby could whip up there and take a pic (he will think I have gone even more balmy lol) there may additional info on a headstone (if there is one)

I hope you do have some luck with the newspaper, since I have started doing this family history research Ive decided to just take the bull by the horns and I just e-mail anyone and everyone lol, even wrote to a bunch of people with the surname I was researching, most replied (to my surprise) and turned out there was no connection at all lol.

Happy hunting, Gail

Monumental inscriptions for cemeteries NZ-wide, can be found on the NZSG Cemeteries microfiches, available at larger libraries.

Hi Lu,

I have learnt something new today, I didnt know that info was available, and here I have been (in the past) trawling cemeteries looking for needles in haystacks lol.

Hi Gail

Shooosh ... don't tell your hubby !    Anyway he probably (secretly) enjoys the trekking through cemeteries ?  Cheesy
And think of all the benefits to be had ... fresh air ... keeping up the fitness levels etc. etc.   (Far better than being stuck in a stuffy library, and trawling microfiche ! )

Incidentally, there is a booklet which accompanies these Monumental Inscriptions microfiche ... it lists the codes allocated to the various cemeteries and makes finding things easier.  [I just mention it, because some libraries "hide" such booklets, behind their counters !]
